Adaptive Brightness? why does it not learn?

OK, so I just picked up a new Motorola Moto g Play (2024). It upgraded itself to Android 14.

I'm new to this adaptive brightness thing, and seems like a good idea to help with battery life, so I thought I'd use it.

However, it is supposed to "learn" your preferences, and I don't want the display to EVER go to 0%. If I'm in a totally dark room, and I pull out my phone, I would like the brightness to be at about 20% (lowest possible setting), but every time I manually increase the brightness to about 20%, it eventually will find it's way back to 0% (or 4% or something too low for my liking).

I do not have Extra Dim setting on (located in Accessibility setting)

I've tried resetting adaptive brightness back to factory setting (which for the life of me I can't find again.........it is NOT located at Apps > show system apps > Device Health Services). I've tried clearing user data and cash from Device Health Services.

Not a huge deal, just unnecessarily frustrating to have to repeatedly adjust the brightness when I'm in a dark-ish room in front of computer. I'm guessing I will have to shut off the feature, because every time I go grab my phone now, I have to adjust brightness.

mine is at Display:

Brightness:
Lit. underneath it is Brightness and below is Automatic brightness,
I can toggle it and it stays on the brightness level.

Yes, or you can (at least I can with my phone) pull down from home screen, and there is a brightness bar than can be increased, but I need to know why it keeps dropping to 4% brightness or 7% etc when I'm trying to "train" it to stay at about 20% for the lowest setting. Every single time, when the phone is idle, and screen goes dark, the brightness is reset back to a very low setting when I access it.
It adapts to a brighter setting when I turn on a light, but I need to know WTF it's not "learning" my preferences. Even in a dark room, 0% or 4% or 7% is too dim for me

ARe you moving into the light and dark rooms almost constantly? Any sunlight in the room?

No, not moving constantly. When the display goes dim, too dim, there is very little light in the room. no sunlight. Sometimes I want it very dark so I can see the screen of my laptop very well, no glare, and for other reasons.

I just can't understand why it just keeps going so dim, and from what I've read online, it's supposed to learn your preferences. My preferences are that I never want it going dimmer than 20%

it seems the algorithm is just not working, or just not designed to do what I'm expecting it to do.

In my search for something that might be helpful for you, I find most net posts claim the feature doesn't work at all or takes a lot of time to adapt. I found nothing that you might do to make the process work as billed or to speed it up.

actually, I very much appreciate your post, and the time you took to find a solution. Yes, I can't seem to find much online myself, but thank you in your searching 👍

I'm actually trying to get it to work on my Pixel 7 but it's not great. It sort of wants to work but It's wonky at best. I'll give it a bit longer before throwing in the towel but I think it's another case of Google being Google 😏

I noticed that when adaptive brightness is on, and I walk outside, even if it's shady, the screen goes to 100% brightness, so I think I'll just turn Adaptive Brightness off, and leave it at about 50% all the time. In most conditions I can see fine outside at 50%, and it should provide some battery saving long-term.
You'd think Adaptive Brightness would allow user-defined parameters, where the user inputs the minimum and maximum range allowed, and the display can adjust within that range. But no, they have to go and be jerks about it lol.

i never bothered with it. it was more annoying than anything else. i am a power user and use my phone all day. i also keep all performances up to its max. as i prefer the screen to be bright and the phone fast. so because of that i make sure i have chargers always ready to charge it. and yes i know this will deplete my battery life in the long run, but i only own phones for 2-3 years before i move on. so battery life is not a concern for me.

thanks. Yes, I've also decided adaptive brightness is more of a pain than anything. Additionally, I have turned off "adaptive battery" as this can cause a delay in notifications. If I receive an important email or text, or am alerted to movement from my security camera, I don't want any delay for those things.
The battery is lasting soooooo much longer than my previous phone anyway, so I'm good with it.
