Software updates that are just bug fixes can be as small as 10mb. The biggest I've experienced I think was nearly 2GB from Android 3.1 Honeycomb to Android 4.0 ICS on my Tab Plus. Granted though that came with an entirely new TouchWiz version which was pretty big.

Whether or not you choose Samsung in the future, your concern should be on the type of screen to avoid this scenario (although Samsung does tend to put SAMOLEDs on their high end devices). Look for LCD type screens.

Usually, having the same brand devices work good due to familiarity. Having different branded devices sometimes leads to annoyances (I know, experienced it). Which is in your case, I'd say the Sony, unless you find something about it that would make another device as an overall better choice...
