Been having 3g issues. I tried some of the fixes suggested in other posts. My time w/o signal was running at least 50%. Now at the moment it is 0%. But instead of showing 3G at the top it now shows 1X. What does this mean?

I'm thinking about getting an LG Optimus V and using it for (among other things) an MP3 player. How many hours (generally) could I expect the battery to last when playing music? Would 8 hours be a stretch, or would that be do-able? Never had a smart phone before so I'm just learning :)
