Is there a way to find this code without having to open the device?

Not that I have found, I did look in the service menu but none of the numbers there tie up with the number I have in the back of my phone.

On my phone, I only had to lift the back off. The number is on the back of the phone, same end as the 3 front buttons, but upside down. It's next to the battery, which I didn't have to remove to get at this number.

Unfortunately, it's not in the list above.

Actually I did have a thought afterwards about how the mini's would get on as you can't remove the battery, so maybe both mini and pro the number is under the cover. So thanks for that bit of information. Mine wasn't on the X10 big's list either

For the mini-pro you do have to take the battery out to find the S/I number....

I am guessing so, altho I did wonder where it might be in the normal mini cos the battery is fixed but believe its under the battery cover on that so possibly same for yours? Maybe you can confirm for others looking later.
