Root 1.6 Root without Data

Is there a root method for Android 1.6 on the Mytouch without downgrading?

Or if its possible to skip the activation on a downgraded version which allows me to root it from a vanilla state.

I have no data plan as in my location there is no available coverage for 3G or any data whatsoever. I have a WiFi network if it helps.

Had to drive 50 miles to get it activated over data last time and dont want to repeat it to root my device.

Yeah, you can skip the initial sign in, go to settings and input your Wifi logon/password, and then sign in over Wifi.
