Root 1 click root or longer root with ADB

I've been reading these threads for weeks and am just about ready to root my Fascinate. I've never done this before. You guys are very generous with your knowledge.
My question is, should I use the method under the sticky by Dirrk, which appears to be really strait forward or the method under Root to Enable Cyanogen ROM Flash, which uses ADB and Busybox and seems a lot more complicated. I ask because I noticed nitsuj17 responded to a question about the merits of 1 click rooting by saying "and root is root regardless of how you do it...just several of us (mainly me) are against not doing things on the computer and doing it the 'right' way." Well I want to do it the right way.

Also, once I've rooted, what's the difference between Odin and Clockworkmod? They both seem to be a tool to get you back to a prior state or rom if you mess up or a flashed rom doesn't work for you. Do you need both? I want to play it as safe as possible. Does Odin get you back to the original rom that verizon put on the phone and clockworkmod get you back to a simpler stripped down safe mode? Again, do I need both?

Sorry if these questions are elementary and thanks for your time.
 
Learning at least elementary ADB will do you much good in the future (i.e. if anything ever starts going wrong).

i think you ll be in good shape if you decide to root your phone and use the rooting tutorial on android central (located in the root sticky) How to Root - Android Forums

while it doesnt involve adb, it does require that you install the correct samsung drivers on your computer...and this is necessary to use odin and install clockwork mod (and is needed to use the sdk anyway).

clockwork mod is the recovery that is built to enable you to "flash" things to your device. some phones can flash it directly from rom manager, on our it must be pushed in odin while your phone is in download mode, then flashed in rom manager..... instructions for cwr: Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix - xda-developers

also before doing any of this its best to have all of the odin recovery files: Odin Restore files to get you to stock - xda-developers

Sorry for the silence but I got sick after right after I started this thread. I'm Back now.
I rooted using the 1 click in the sticky and installed Rom manager and titanium pack up. The first thing I want to do is make a back up. So in Rom Manager I tapped Flash ClockworkMod Recovery because I was told to when I first tried to back up the current rom. That appeared to go well. Then I clicked "Back Up Current Rom" and my phone goes black, then starts to reboot and says :
{HIghlighted] Install system now
Apply Sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition


[In Yellow]--Install from Package...
[Yellow] Finding update package...
[Yellow] Opening update package...
[yellow] Verifying update package...
[In Orange]E:failed to verify whole-file signature
[Orange] E:Sinature verification failed
[Orange] Installation aborted.

The phone doesn't do anything and stays frozen until I hit the home button. Then the phone loads with what appears to be the stock rom, which i think is right. But, I'm not confident that I have a backup. I can't seem to find one on the card using the stock file reader. I'd like to try Cyanogen, but not unless I have a back up.
Can anyone help?

When you installed cwr did you then hit flash clockwork recovery in rom manager and select the fascinate (needed to be done twice)

If so see if you can actually boot into cwr....select reboot into recovery from rom manager....should automatically take you into green recovery

Can I just do it now with odin, even though I tried to do it with Rom manager? Do I need to remove the residue of my failed attempt to flash clockworkmod with rom manager first?

just push it in odin....then go back into rm and flash it twice for the fascinate....then try to reboot into recovery
 
I found the following on my sd card when I mounted it. [I tried to paste an image of the explorer screen shot, couldn't just paste it after I created an gif and jpeg]
A Download folder, and Recovery-Update folder both full of files and a tiny settings file. Does this mean that Clockwork is on my phone? Even though I didn't use Odin. Did I just fail to try and flash it twice? Should I remove these files before using Odin?
 
The CW Odin package doesn't affect the SD card, just the kernel and recovery partitions.
 
I downloaded Odin and installed the clockwordmod. Odin says PASS in green. Also says <ID:0/005> Added!!

Do that and then flash recovery twice in rm....then try reboot into recovery....should be gtg then
 
Thanks nitsuj17! I did as you said and believe everything is done. I think I am rebooted into recovery. Is there a way to check?
I did all this because I hate the stock rom as it is. It's always freeing and is slow. I tested the evo and the vibrant and loved them, but I couldn't get 3g at work which was a must. I will probably try to flash a different rom at some point. Until I learn a little more about benfits of being rooted and roms and kernels,I will stick to freezing apps w/TBU as suggested the thread at XDA Developers titled HOW TO:Root, Install Clockwork, Remove Bloatware, and more*updated 12/3/10*. Any suggestions for learning about roms and kernels and ADB and stuff.
 
Should I do Nandroid? I keep seeing refernces to it. Where do I find it? Does it do the same thing as clockworkmod. Don't they both do backups in case of disaster? Odin can be used for this right? I get Rom Manager and reinstalling with Clockworkmod, but not how to use the others to recover. What's the difference between them?

nandroid is the backup in clockwork recovery...if you navigate to backup/restore and click backup...it ll make a nandroid to your sdcard

if you have problems and what to revert to a backup, you boot into cwr and go to restore and restore that backup....:)
 
Thank you so much. I don't understand why they call the backup a nandroid. The nandroid is 1kb and the other items in the backup folder are hundreds of thous of Kbs.

One more question. I want to install the cleanbrowser from [Release] (8/11 fix) Browser (Removed VZW, Bing) - xda-developers. One stated option is to use clockworkmod. Do they mean to use Rom manager? And How? Do I install the whole folder to the sd card and then use rom manager as if it were a rom? I read through 6 pages of the thread and still am not clear how to use cwm to install. I don't want to display my ignorance to a whole other community and was hoping it's a quick answer for you guys.

No they do mean use clockwork.first d/l zip, then push zip into sd card. now Boot into clockwork, wipe cache, then go to install zip from sd card. Find zip and flash it.

I haven't personally used this zip file but thats the process for flashing a zip file in clockwork.
 
Yeah anytime it says to install with clockwork its implied that the file is a flashable zip that you put on your sdcard and boot into.cwr to install
 
Thanks you guys. I did what you said and it seemed to go well. I followed instructions from davidnmegan6907. However, afterwards, when I click the browser Icon from LauncherPro, Dolphin Hd opens instead of the stock browser. A Droid Icon titled browser is on the homepage but says "could not launch the requested activity", when I click on it. The stock browser does not appear in the applications tray.

I will seek help from the thread referenced above where Browserclean is provided by Flipsoul. I'll let you know if I figure this out. Thanks again
 
I posted a request for help with the thread posting the browser with the above info but added that I had frozen the stock browser with titanium backup. I'm wondering if that caused the problem? Perhaps CWM needed to find the stockbrowser to uninstall it and couldn't find it because it was frozen?
