I've been looking to get an android tablet since the ipad came out and i'm looking for something that does about the same but isn't apple! I'm not looking for one that has 3G, just wireless and just looking for people's thoughts. I'm getting tired of waiting as it seem there's always good andriod tablets "just about to come out" but I've not seen too many of them about.

anyway, just looking for thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks

Dave

Well, we haven't seen too many big name come out with tablets yet. I think most are waiting for Gingerbread to alleviate some user frustration with a tablet.

I think if you're comfortable modding then Viewsonic G-tab or imo best out of box is the Archos 101. Viewsonic is slightly more expensive but has a much better processor. Archos has the added benefit of HDMI out and it does seem fairly decent out of the box.

Right now I don't think any tablet is perfect. We are still on the first wave of them including the iPad.

If you are sick of waiting then imo grab one of the tabs above. Otherwise coming in Jan another decent tablet is looking to come out and then there is CES 6th ish? To see if and when the big makers will join the party.

Thanks for that. Do you reckon I'd be able to put Gingerbread on these tablets once it comes out?

Edit from original - Makers are waiting for Honeycomb not Gingerbread. Woops. :o

Well "officially" I do not think the Viewsonic will get it. Unofficially it very well could be the first tablet with it. Seems to be a fairly decent price point and have pretty good support from modders.

Archos I am rly not too sure about. They may update their tabs or they may do what they did before and just make "next gen" devices and just release new tablets with updated software. Hopefully hardware also. Archos did a good job of staying cheap and I think that is what they do and will continue to do.

But I do think 3rd part support will be enough to get both of these Gingerbread. However with the big Moto and possibly HTC making some killer hardware to go with Gingerbread these may not be worth keeping.

All depends on what you want to do with your device and how satisfied you will be with second rate. These could be the best for 6 months or maybe even a whole year depending on just when more tablets will be made by quality players.

Does appear though that there will be support by 3rd parties for a good deal of tablets that don't live up to expectations. So if you aren't afraid to fiddle you can today for roughly $350 have a fairly acceptable device.

Can folks confirm that the Advent Vega is the same as the Viewsonic G Tablet? If that's the case I think I would get it and root it and stick a better ROM on it. I pressume you can do that with the Advent Vega?

If u google it there's is more info. The specs are pretty much the same. Its funny how the reviews for the gtablet and vega are also similar. They both pretty much say that the out of the box experience sucks but mods make the device better. Check the modaco forums to see what type of modding they have for the vega.

Yeah, reckon putting a custom ROM on it makes it pretty good. The only other concern I've got is that it doesn't seem to have a home button. I have an HTC hero phone and I would imagine an android device without a home button could be a bit annoying. Any thoughts?

Stopped in at PC world on the way home. The guy there said the Advent Vega has been pulled 'cause there were issues with drivers on it not letting it connect to some printer. He says it should be back on sale on line later in the week with that sorted.

Hmmm... sounds like odd reasoning by someone more familiar with Windows than Android :) Seems most places have been having a hard time keeping them in stock... can keep up somewhat with where they are available and at what price via the Modaco site which seems the defacto Vega community...
