15% battery usage only overnight standby!!!

robertlau

Lurker
3G/Wifi/auto sync all off

just put there and check in the morning...OMG....battery dropped from 100% to only 83%!!!

Check the other day, still the same.

Any advice how can this happen? What kind of background process/apps can cause such a huge battery usage with screen off?

Thanks a zillion...........

This is caused by Mobile Data. Although not in use, it keeps a connection, which drains the power.

There is a setting within "Wireless & Networks" -> "Mobile Networks" -> "Enable always-on mobile data"

Think of it as leaving your laptop on all the time. It can check emails whenever it wants, and when you want to use it, its already there and ready to be used, however will drain the battery. Whereas if you turn the laptop off when not in use, you have to wait for it to boot up every time, and it cant check emails automatically.

Hi, sonesh

Appreciate your prompt feedback. but I just checked and found that actually i already disabled this "Enable always-on mobile data" function. It is UNCHECKED...:(:(:(

aeroplane mode should sort it out too.

so long as you don't mind being uncontactable while asleep....

You could add a button to your homescreen.

Settings > Personalise > widget > power control

allows you to control wifi and other settings, there is also a button to disable mobile web in
....settings > personalise > widget > power control > settings

Or you could use an app:

I'm using green power free and have it set to turn off mobile data and wifi when the screen is off for more than 5 minutes. It then turns off and on at set intervals to allow programs to refresh. The paid version allows the setting of different settings at night.
I'm not sure how much this affects power usage though as I'm concerned that an application checking but unable to connect will retry multiple times, hence using more power than connecting once and refreshing.

last night dropped from 100% to 80%!!!

With all communication off (wifi, 3G, bluetooth, GPS) and all sync disabled (background data disabled as well), really cannot understand what is still sucking the battery in standby mode!!!

Battery usage show: cell sandby 49% and phone idle 38%. The high % is understandable since the screeen is off, but the absolute 20% battery usage overnight really confuses and frustrates me a lot.....

serious help and advices needed here....

Thanks......

With:
Wifi / 3G / Backround Data / Live Wallpaper all off, from 10pm to 5:30am on standby mine drops only 2-3%. So I would say somethings a miss.

If you use Gmail then this is push and I found this to drain my battery along with the Yahoo Mail app, even on standby. So I just use the native Mail App.

But if you are using the native mail app check the settings and turn the check mail frequency to Manual. By default it's set to check every 15 mins. And if you have backround Data turned off the mail app can't complete the 'check mail' and it continually tries to check your mail thus killing the battery.

Have you tried calibrating your battery? - I tried this and it didn't work at first. But then I turned off 'FAST BOOT' in the settings, and it did indeed work for me.

Do you use the native calender app? - People have issues with this keeps trying to sync all the time. I don't use this so I don't know what the fix is for this. Sorry.

Hope this helps.................

When you say overnight how many hours exactly? By default even with everything turned off the phone uses about 1 to 2% an hour, so if you have it at 100% at 10 PM, and you check it at 10 AM, seeing it at 80% would be normal (for 12 hours you can see it get as low as 76% without using anything). Now if you have it at 100% at 10 PM, and check it at 5 AM, and it's at 80%, you may have a bad battery.

When your battery says 100% it means anywhere above 90% so the drop might not be as big as you think, there are a zillion posts on here and xda regarding how your battery percentage meter and the recharging cycle work.

Do a *228... Your roaming data may be inaccurate, causing you to switch to analog mode for voice service (Which requires more power).

I had this issue when a VZW tower was down for a bit, causing me to latch to a further tower, but it kicked over to analog mode because it needed to reach a tower further away.

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for your ideas here. I just feedback here together:

wastedagen: Since i turn off all auto-sync function, the push gmail should not be much of the problem, shouldn't it? I am not using the built-in calenda, either. Battery calibration with fast boot off was done long before. Maybe I gave it a try again??

BobbyPhoenix : Overnight means 11:30pm - 7:30 in the morning. 8 hours with 20% battery drop, do you think it is normal? I don't think so....

PSkeptic : what do u mwan by "Do a *228..."?? sorry for this....

Between 10:30pm and 9am (Syncing and Wifi turned off between midnight and 7am), I lost 25%.

Then again, I took it off charge yesterday morning, and am expecting it to last through to tonight, so I'm OK with this.
