~1500 bucks for a new PC

If Microsoft is going to Charge another $100 for this already, I may just move to OSX...

As just an opinion of one that doesn't quite know how to run a trillion dollar business, I think they've been made aware that a large percentage of their once-loyal customers feel just like you. And to win back their loyalty, they'll have to make their future irresistibly affordable.

Thing is, Microsoft is getting into the hardware game. The Surface is probably the best selling Windows 8 tablet out there due to all the marketing they been doing. According that link about windows 9, about 60% of the market has not moved to windows 8 yet. Most of them are still on windows 7 and xp. Why is this? Because it's a high price to get into the new os. Windows 7 computers can easily handle the new os, so why aren't they switching?

$100 for the upgrade? I would never pay that, because if it aint broke, don't fix it. The computer I'm running now is Windows 7. If it was like $20 to upgrade this OS, I would more than likely upgrade it just to have all my computers upgraded to Windows 8.

Microsoft is in a state of change, so who knows what they will be like in a year from now. I'm a bit excited to see where they go. Maybe this new CEO will do something good with this change.

Most typical end users such as my father and sister i.e. non techy types, just don't go out and buy Windows and install it. It comes with the PCs they buy, and that's what they use until they eventually replace the PC. Maybe if MS were to offer it in their app store as an easy download and install/upgrade, without having having to format the HDD and doing a full-blown clean install, along with having to look for drivers and re-installing all their software. Apple basically does this with OS X, it's offered in their App Store and can be installed over the top of the older version. Can you do an install of Win 8.1 over the top of Win 7 or Vista without having to look for drivers and reinstalling all the software? Sometimes previously you had to format the HDD before installing a new version of Windows, and start afresh.

If and when Windows 9 Beta pops out, I'm gonna install it on its own partition, just like I do with my umpteen distros... probably not usable, but it'll reveal what to expect next spring.

Microsoft didn't have an app store until windows 8. And their app store is crap. Microsoft needs to do something about it.

They do need to make it easier to get the updates. Much easier.

What makes no sense is that MSFT, Microsoft's stock, has almost doubled in price since W8.0 was released...

...makes ya wonder how important desktopper opinions really are.

I'm sure many people are still buying new PCs, maybe to replace their old long running XP machines, and Vista machines, and of course most new PCs come with Win 8.1 for which Microsoft gets $$$.

For most typical users, when they're upgrading the OS, they're buying a new PC.

Go to PCPartPicker and register a account in case you put it for the whole world to see :)
I would recommend the i7-4770k for this. The socket is LGA1150 so be sure that you pick a motherboard that supports LGA1150.
