Lurker
Dropped by 32gb S3 again but this time the screen went blank. the digitizer seems to work (hearing the beeps when I touch the screen). I just bought a working 16gb phone. How would I get the 32 in the 16? Would it be a matter of swapping out the mother board or is it more/less involved?

Had this problem with my note 3 and had to return it... they said it had a bad sd reader on the board...

IF the motherboard fits then that's what you'll have to do, if not or if it's easier, move the whole display unit from the 16gb to the 32gb. It's hard to know if it's the display that's damaged though or something on the board

Mother board transplants are pretty easy. There's 3 or 4 ribbon cable cconnectors, a wifi connector, and around 9 or 10 screws.

Things to watch for: the black screw inside the phone holding the motherboard down; the round wifi connector; be careful snapping the connectors back in place - line them up right, then snap - don't force if they are misaligned.

Outside of that, pretty easy, and should fix your issue. I doubt you damaged the motherboard by dropping the phone. You likely either disconnected the LCD ribbon cable (rare, but I've seen it), or broke your LCD.

Should have added - I am assuming both phones are the same carrier. Motherboards in S3's are not always interchangeable between carriers, because the boards have slightly different components, and the LCD assemblies are molded differently to accommodate them.

There are a few inter-carrier swaps possible, but not all.

Thanks for all the good info. Yes they are the same carrier. I dropped mine a number of times (the outer screen was cracked to the point the screen protector was holding it together). The last drop and it went blank. Was able to use the wife's S3 to figure out where some of the buttons were on my screen to activate some features on mine. I will check the LCD cable but have a feeling I'll be doing a mobo transplant to get my 32gb phone back. Thank again
