16 GB vs 32 GB

Sure it's games really. Gameloft's Asphalt 8: Airborne is 3.2GB, and it can't be installed on the SD. Yeh install a couple more like that, and your "8.64GB" will all be gone. It's probably these huge multi-gigabyte Gameloft and EA graphic extravaganzas that some people might wish to play on their flagship 16GB S5s. If one is content just to play Bejeweled rather than Call Of Duty, 8GB might be enough. Even installing apps, along with the additional internal storage they might use, the GBs can soon mount up.

OK, thanks. I'm not into games. I use my phone for business. I'm convinced now. 16 GB will be plenty for my use along with a SD card.

S5 records videos at 4K
So better get the 32 GB variant bcoz recording a few minute video shall fill your internal up to a extent.
Expandable 128Gb is an option but sd cards are not always better

Yeh it has 4K recording capabilities, sure most people won't be shooting at that high though. I mean what can you do with 4K videos clips and current technology? Can't share them on YouTube, Google+ or Facebook, unless you transcode them down. Can't edit them with Windows Movie Maker or Apple iMovie. To edit 4K you need something like Adobe Premiere Pro and quite a high-end workstation.

From what I have been reading is that app developers need to update their app to use the restricted folder they are allowed to use on the SD card. So google now restricts apps from able to read and write all over the place on the SD card. This way it is more secure. So if the app you use is up to date to utilize the SD card on KitKat you should have little to no prob.

My example is that I was afraid BeyondPod would not allow me to save podcasts to the SD card any more. The developers have updated the app to have the restricted folder able to store downloaded podcasts. This frees up around 5GB on the on-board storage for me. The thing I do not know is if games are still able to have the majority of their data stored on the SD card. I am not a big gamer on the phone (my tablet and Nvidia Shield are for that) so I will not need that much storage for apps. I know others will have an issue.

In summary, from what I read, developers can update their app to have data stored on the SD. Kitkat is still a small piece of the pie in regards to android OS adoption pie chart but it is growing and I'm sure app developers are updating more and more.

Finally, Please let me know if I have anything wrong or off. This is an interesting topic to read into and a little laborsome to understand at times.

I too will wait for a 32GB version. It's my fault - I am an app hoarder. However, are we sure the GS5 can't put apps on the SD card? I know under KitKat 4.4, there are restrictions on the way apps car write to it, but I thought you'd still be able to move apps (that are allowed) to the SD card?

After all the complaints, Samsung released an update that enabled apps to SD on the GS4. I thought they'd do the same with the GS5, unless 4.4 doesn't allow for it at all?

I said it in another thread, but I am very surprised that Samsung and ATT didn't learn any lesson from the memory debacle that came from the memory left over on the 16GB GS4. Therefore I'll hold onto my GS4 a little longer and see if they come out with the 32GB model. The 32GB GS4 came out like 12 days after the launch.

Given the growing size of games, you do not have to be a hoarder now to run out. 16GB models from this point IMO should only apply to folks that do not bother with games on their device. This assumes an SD slot is on the device for media, since too small even for some non gamers.

It never worked properly, it moves the app but not the app data which is what takes up all the space.

Some smaller apps it works well with but they were never the issue.

This is a key a lot of folks do not appreciate. Most large games do not allow the main data to do to external storage. This means for most large games that cause storage issues in the first place, there is not much value in apps2sd.

The only comprehensive solution is more internal storage.

BTW, I wonder if VZW will milk the 16GB model for three months like last year with the S4. That is how much longer it took to get the 32GB model then.

Yeah, I have to admit that my view was that if you weren't a heavy gamer that it wasn't an issue but I don't even think it's a gamer thing anymore. I have very few simple games on my device - I do hoard apps, but not games - and I've run up to my memory limit - which is one of the reasons why I would move from my GS4 to a GS5 32GB and not a 16GB.

In any case, regarding the data issue - this is so very true: the only "major" game I have and one of the three I have installed is Tapped Out. Right now I'm looking at App Info for Tapped Out and it shows me that the app takes up 14.82MB on the device and 46.75MB on the SD card. That's all fine and dandy (still it took almost 15MB even with it sent to the SD card) but then you see that the data takes up a whopping 762MB on the device and ZERO on the SD card. The zero on the SD card data makes me think that programmers can have the data stored on the SD card if they wanted to. However, I'm not going to wait for that because it's obvious it's not high priority on their minds.

People will say - well do you need to install 300+ apps. My answer to that is yes.

If they want to release 16GB devices, I really think they should then release their software/firmware on separate EPROM on the device!! But I guess there is a large market for people who don't need more storage.

The Samsung ROM is 8gb in size. Let me repeat that, the Samsung ROM is 8gb in size and the 16GB version will have less than 8GB of space for your apps and games. With all of the crap apps leaving behind data and scrap files after you uninstall them, this adds up after a few months.
This is one reason Android phones get a bad rap. An iPhone 5S has 13gb of space for the 16GB version. Thanks for the bloatware Samsung. Even with the (micro) sd card, not all apps and games will support placing their files on the sd card. After a few months of use, a normal user will run out of space on their 16GB S5 and will want to switch to another phone or to an iPhone. Good luck with that if you are under contract.
Phone manufacturers need to reduce the bloatware and app developers need to update their apps so their apps will use the sd card to store data, seamlessly. Maybe in a year's time 16GB phones won't be such a big deal, but for right now, I will wait for the 32GB version or choose another phone (Sony Z2?) that leaves me more than half of what the advertised storage size is.

It will be a little higher than 8GB, still not enough though.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Storage Beats Galaxy S4

Does anyone know when the 32GB will be available on VZW?

I don't have a lot of games but what I do is save my music to device from google music to save on data. So that takes up a lot of space.

I thought there was an option to store songs on the SD with Google Music. I know this issue has come up before and apparently you can do it. I can't provide an answer myself because Google Music is unavailable, and so don't use it.

Correct. There's an option in Play Music's Settings, in the Downloading section, to choose Storage Location.

Okay - I don't have that option with the Galaxy Nexus as there is no SD card with that phone. But good to know that if I get the 16GB S5 I can do that.

Unless you are a casual to light app user, the 16gb model seems problematic for a device to use for two years.

Key point though is choice, but no carriers appear to be offering a choice of 16 and 32 at launch.

Still think if the S4 is the behavior guide, Verizon will milk sales like Munson for a few months and then offer a 32gb model.
