160 Char text limit

Verizon's auto-reply text message about messaging people on other networks getting only getting the first 160 characters is only half true.

They receive only the first 160 characters for that intial text message. However, additional text messages are sent to the recipient in 160 character increments until the entire message is sent. This is done automatically. It is not a feature of android, it is how the text messaging system works.

example:

160 characters or less = 1 text message
161 characters to 320 characters = 2 text messages
321 characters to 480 characters = 3 text messages
and so on.

So, there is no need to switch to sending MMS messages. Unless you're actually sending a pic or movie. Hope that helps.

This has been my experience with the people I have txted with the characters exceeding the 160 char limit. Way better than the default BB that stops at 160.

From my experience (both with the Droid and before the Droid) VZW only splits sms messages to VZW customers. Non VZW customers only get the first 160. (and they send you a text stating that's what they did).

Now, on the Droid, you can convert to MMS easily by adding a subject to the message (don't leave the subject field blank, or it will be converted back to SMS). A subject can be added by hitting the menu button, and then hitting add subject. I've tried this with a Sprint user, and it worked.

Seems there should be an app out there that would send multiple messages automatically...

ISTR that you need to disable regular SMS notification when using Handcent - how do I go about doing this again?

Updated this morning and one of the new options is "Split 160" which they say is useful to Verizon customers. Just tried it and it works in splitting up to 3 messages.

Open the messaging app > menu button > settings >notifications

Thanks - I forgot I had to open message app first, and couldn't find it in the regular (OS) settings menu.

On a side note - also forgot that I had already disabled this when I had SMSpopup installed lol....

All for naught.

Thanks, this app solves two things I was really missing from my old windows mobile phone: A running character counter and splitting messages. Now all I want is the ability to spell check at the end and I'd be a happy camper.
