Root [1st Gen] Kindle Fire Utility cannot find my Kindle

Adamantus

Newbie
I'm trying to install CM7 on my Kindle Fire using TWRP. I downloaded Kindle Fire Utility but it said "device not found". I installed the drivers and it still couldn't find my kindle. I found a post here:

Kindle Fire Utility v0.9.2 (1/9/11) - Page 4 - xda-developers

that said I needed to download the Android SDK, run a command prompt, and do lots of other things, but I have to believe there is a simpler way. Has anyone else had this problem?

On a side note, I'm trying to do the method in the link above, but I my Android SDK folder is a subfolder of C:\Program Files (x86) which doesn't work in the command prompt because of the space.

What space are you talking about? When you run "adb" which is the command prompt method that they're talking about in that post, you don't cd it to your Android SDK folder. With the Kindle Fire Utility (KFU) You don't need to do all the adb commands as you would normally if you were rooting it with BurritoRoot or what not. KFU basically does all of it for you and adds SuperRoot for you during the process. You do need to go in and edit your android-usb file with the 0x1940 line at the very end of everything else though before pointing running KFU.

I also can't connect. Just got a used KF and followed instructions on multiple sites, using multiple computers, multiple cables, etc and I just can't connect even though all signs point to me using the proper driver. It's been a few hours of trying and I'm really out of ideas.

Have you edited the 2 files necessary to allow adb to see your kindle? I believe regardless of the method you use to root, you still need to do those edits or it won't see it.

Yes you still do need to do those edits or your computer will not be able to see your kindle connected through adb. Did you happen to manually search for a USB upgrade when your kindle is connected? If you just have your computer search through the internet for one it wont find the correct Google USB Drive that you need.

What edits? What files?
The adb_usb.ini already has 0x1949 (I didn't do it manually, it was already there from doing something else). Is that one of them?

This link has the both files listed and the edits needed to get your pc to recognize the KF. The adb_usb.ini file is one of them but there is another one is SDK that needs edited as well.

Thanks for the link. I'll have to check that when I get home, but I'm not sure my Android sdk is installed properly. I'm getting the "Java not found" error. Yes, the latest Java for Win7x64 is installed and the "click the back button then next button again" solution does not work for me.

Btw, even though the 6.3 update removed root, why is it that root-only things still work, like Google apps (especially gmail) and Swype?
Basically, the kindle is working exactly like I want it to and as a bonus I no longer have to toggle anything to watch video.
You may wonder then, why do I want to root again? Just because. :)

Agreed on the reason for rooting......I will do that will any android device I get(or my kids get for that matter :) ).

I would imagine that the update not wiping anything but just replacing the file would leave the SU app and the other Google Apps installed and working. Do you have a custom recovery? I know on the Evo it requires the stock recovery to update and it will fail without it. Going to have to check my kids kindles and see if they got the update and how it affected it. They haven't mentioned any changes yet though.

I have whatever recovery comes with the kindle fire utility. That's how I rooted it last time (on a different laptop that is temporarily fubar because of Microsoft's last patch a few weeks ago). Though the voodoo rootkeeper didn't work with this update.

As for your kids noticing, as I said, it's working exactly as it was before, except you can watch video without toggling root (because it's no longer rooted).
The only reason I knew it updated is because it was sitting next to me when I noticed it was stuck on the kindle fire screen for a long time, then when it finally booted it showed the system update in progress in the notifications.

I think it's the same with the Bionic which is why I'm waiting for ICS before I root.
Admittedly, the only thing I would probably do with root on the bionic is remove Verizon bloatware. Otherwise I'm happy the way it is.

[pretend there is a stock tapatalk signature here that only seems to appear in certain forums even though it's set in the general settings]

I am not sure about the Bionic but the Evo 4g has way to many options to not root it the first time its turned on. ;)
