hmmm, i wouldn't mind a htc legend or desire or something from ebay.

ok so I'm going to decide between the lg eve gw620 or a good phone I find on ebay.

I'm having a look at the HTC Desire and Motorola XT5. Both look quite promising but are beyond $200 sadly.

The Motorola XT5 is $299 and I think the HTC Desire is near the same price. And the HTC Desire is locked to Telstra in Australia.

dam..ok thanks

just found out the gw620 doesn't upgrade past 1.5 officially. (I really don't want to root or flash or use roms I don't like to mess around with firmware)

I was really looking forward to the gw620, had a keyboard, it had a nice screen and it looked really good.

does anyone know of a either 2.2 or 2.1 android phone with at least a 3 inch display screen with a keyboard, (kind of like the keyboards how they slide out but it doesn't matter if it has one or not just would prefer it) and a 3+mp camera for under $250USD/AUD?

any help would be great! thanks

You should be able to get a used Motorola Milestone for cheap! I had a Motorola Droid (US cousin to the milestone) and it was great. The processor is only 600MHz but the phone is built very well, and officially has 2.2. I just sold my Droid for $150 on eBay with an extra battery, new case, and the phone was in great condition. I know the Milestone is more locked down than the Droid but if you are not wanting to hack or mod it...really doesn't matter.

Don't know what carriers you would be able to use it on though...

Where can it be found in Australia though? I can't seem to find any stores that have it unlocked or on Vodafone.

I'm pretty sure that's locked to vodafone down here, cool I'll check it out thanks.

how's the screen?

3.7" LCD Display with 854 x 480 resolution. It's nice...The colors aren't as vibrant as some of the newer "super amoled" and "super lcd" displays but it works well in direct sunlight and looks as good if not better than most of the phones you have mentioned.

A phone with a 3.2" screen would look pretty small compared to the 3.7" screen. Consider the fact that the much heralded iPhone's screen is 3.5".

I only found one resualt of a milestone on ebay and it was in used condition and was still in auction. I don't like getting stuff off ebay, kind of hard to know if it's good or not...

any other phones like the milestone? still kind of expansive at stores.

Can you link me to some of the store's websites that you are looking at? I would be nice to see what they are currently selling.

The milestone launched in late 2009 or early 2010. The Droid hasn't been sold here in the states for nearly a year!

WOW! You guys are getting raked over in Australia! :-(

I realize that you are buying unlocked phones (no contract required) but there are no affordable high end devices. The closest "decent" phones I find are the LG Optimus One and HTC Wildfire (both around $300). Even those phones are not top notch phones IMO.

I mean the HTC Hero and Motorola Milestone selling for $399.99??? OUCH! They don't even sell their equivalents in the US anymore because they are more than a year old.

If you can't buy a high end device used...I'm afraid you may have to pay $400-$500 to get a truly decent phone...and that's a lot to throw down on a phone.

what about if i find a phone over in the us and buy it and use it in australia. would it work?

world the wall charger be different?
would the sim work?
i don't know

The phone would need to be unlocked and operate in these bands (according to AUSDroid):

3G (WCDMA/UMTS): 2100MHz & 900MHz (850MHz in construction)
2G (GSM): 900MHz

You use European wall chargers in Australia right? Phones like the HTC Legend is a European phone...not even sold in the states so they would come with the Euro wall charger.

yeah australia and new Zealand use the same chargers I think.

wish there was a way to customize your phone, I wouldn't use 3g or 2g I'd use a home network wifi and play games, facebook, text and call on it, would watch movies on my tv and would just take photos with the camera on my phone.

any websites I could get phones from at a good price? unlocked preferably

Unlocked phones here in the US are not as common as they are elsewhere. Most devices sold here are new on contract with the carrier or used without a contract (but locked to a specific US carrier).

I'm looking but running into the same problems with the unlocked devices for outside of the US...really expensive devices that don't come with very impressive specifications. It's not that one of the phones you were looking at won't work...It's just that I don't want you to spend $200+ and then not be satisfied with it's performance.

Well if possible, try and go with something above $200. That HTC Wildlife looks like one of the best choices. I've considered buying it but I'm trying to find out where I can get it on Vodafone.

I'll see what the limit is, hopefuly I'll find a phone, the htc does seem pretty good! just hope i'll be able to get it unlocked, I don't think vodafone would have it on their website unlocked...

Looks like a great choice. It has Android 2.1, 700MHz processor and 512MB RAM which means it may get a 2.3 update at some point. But have you found a price for it? I can't seem to find one.

ebay. trying to find overseas phones because they're normally cheaper but I'm not sure where to get a wall charger for import phones

don't worry u will get the jack or converter that fits in your charger and than it can be used in your Australian plug!! :)
