2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

Guys the update is completely random. Has nothing to do with where you live, your hair color, or how many times you Check-in.

*bangs head against wall*

We've been waiting for MONTHS and MONTHS for this update. Now its rolling out so waiting another day or two for it to reach my phone is really no big deal. I don't know what the fascination is with being the FIRST to get it....

This isn't about "firsties". This is about not having to wait for the OTA update to reach your device. The guy that got his update yesterday can have all the glory of "firsties". What we all would have preferred to have happen, as in the "in a perfect world scenario", is that someone with enough technical acumen would have gotten the update, along with the ability and know-how to extract the URL the file is contained in so that this could be shared with the community.

Yes, we have been waiting "months and months" for the official update. Some folks just got the phone in April and are complaining like they've had it since the launch in November. I have personally had an Eris since January. I like the promise of 2.1 (I'm running leak v.3) but I think it needs a bit more spit and polish. There are still rough edges. I'm hoping that the official update rounds the corners. If it doesn't, then I know that I will have to bide my time until root is available.

i am extremely lagging in recieving and making calls version 3 i actually miss calls when trying to swipe down to answer because its so slow then when i push talk i seriously have to wait easily 5 seconds before call starts

I saw this on XDA:

1. DIAL ##pst (##778)
2. Password 000000
3. Select Modem
4. Select Slot cycle
5. Change to 1 or 0
6. When you're done exploring all the different options, be sure to hit "menu" and to save the changes. Don't back out as it won't save them.
7. You will be forced to restart and the changes should be made.

SLOT CYCLE controls the amount of seconds it pages the cell tower.

Here's the explanation for the slot cycle seconds:
2 - Page tower every 5.12 seconds for new call/text/vm/etc,
1 - Page every 2.56
0 - Page every 1.28

Supposedly this fixes some of the dialer lag.

+1

Verizon is just too chicken to actually do a release..

no balls.. Mcafee shut down millions of puters in one day with its update 2 weeks ago.. they have balls lol..

I checked in the market and there appear to be live wallpapers. I have not tried them though.

The top three search results are as follows:

Nexusmod 2.0 Live Wallpaper
Popsquares Live Wallpaper
AndWobble Live Wallpaper

I think that these just show up because you have 2.1 on the phone. Nothing more.

I set my slot cycle to 1 and it helped my dialer lag tremendously. Also use call log trimmer. I haven't missed a call because I couldn't swipe down since I did this. I did have that problem when I was on v2. Currently the contact picture won't necessary show up right away but I have enough time to answer the call.

Ok so because I already downloaded the leak for the 2.1 update, verizon believes that I aleady have the 2.1 update. Is there anything I can do to get the ACTUAL OFFICIAL OS update?

Probably wait for the manual download/update like the rest of us that installed leaks. Installing the leaks looks like it has a price.

But if you flashed your phone once (or more), it shouldn't be a problem to do it again.

Verizon is just too chicken to actually do a release..

I suppose that they'd think that there's little point in getting hosed with bandwidth from everybody who hasn't received it OTA yet. They may as well wait a while for most users to get OTA before they post the download; there won't be as much traffic.

The key difference between both companies is that Verizon has most of its subscriber base tied into a service contract. If Verizon sent an update that botched your device, rendering it unusable, they would have to immediately send out a replacement. Imagine if 90% of the Eris community was impacted by this. I don't think Verizon has enough certified, like-new replacements to dole out in a scenario like that. A controlled update, like the one we are in right now, is just that. Controlled. If 1,000 - 5,000 users experience issues with the update the download site / file can be shut off. Users experiencing those issues can swap their device for a like-new replacement.

Now if a million plus users (hypothetical) all picked up the phone and blasted Verizon for an update that caused serious issues with their device, don't you think that there would be at least several thousand that would have "had it" and exited their contract? It would be a PR nightmare. Bide your time and wait for the update like the rest of us, or continue to hope as I do that someone will have the ability to share the official update sooner rather than later.

I have a feeling everyone who does this will subsequently be complainiing about battery life. I also have this feeling that if everyone did this it will eventually cause issues in the cell and will be overriden by cell configuration, not the phone.

Foxcow, do you have Live Wallpaper?

Live wallpaper has been available in the Market for 2.1 leak users for a while now. Just because they are available in the Market doesn't mean they will work or work well with the Eris without crippling the performance.

The issue isn't bandwidth. This is a controlled release. If you think about it, this is the smartest way to go about it. They do the intial update to a small subset of users in day one and double the amount with each passing day until a majority of the users have been reached. If bandwidth was an issue, this would reduce the load. However, as has been pointed out previously, this is not the case. This is a quality control measure plain and simple. They want to ensure the update is reaching subcribers correctly and that any issues (most should be known within 24 hours) are dealt with right away. If anything is deemed serious / critical, they can pull the plug on the OTA and push back the release until a patch is found.

If you haven't received the OTA by the start of next week it should be available on the VZW site, or linked from there to pcdphones. For most leakers, this is going to be the way to go. However, I'm still holding out that someone will have a way to snatch the update and post it.

I agree that this isn't about "firsties" as that isn't what I was shooting for. It was just a confirmation beyond a reasonable doubt that the rollout had begun because many still had their doubts. In that perfect world, someone would have answered other posters and I's several queries on how to save the update if it did come. I asked several times and received no answer so I assumed that it could either not be done or no one cared.

I would've loved nothing more to share but I didn't know how.

I'm not an expert, nor do I claim to be. I saw this on XDA and supposedly it helped with dialer lag. I am not aware of what the repurcussions would be for altering the settings to as described. Obviously one would do this if they had a problem with dialer lag. I do, but I haven't personally tried this. Thank you for mentioning the possible strain on battery life and subsequent chance these settings might be overridden by the tower.

official verizon support told me on twitter i would still be able to get the official download im running leak version 3 and i have noticed they have stressed all hand sets so i think ( my opinion here ) is that unless your running a rom with ota turned off you should get the ota but AGAIN THIS IS MY OPINION i dont want to start rumors

I do not have the root, I have the 2.1 v3 leak. When I called verizon I tryed to ask them if the update was available, and the woman told me that I already had the 2.1 update. I just want the official one already.
