I am thinkg of getting the Fascinate I know the earlier version had problems with the GPS locking in and the soft keys lighting went off before the screen. With Froyo have any of these issues been resolved. Also buying from a private selling how do I confirm that the ESN number is good. Thanks.

The softkey timeout issue has been resolved since one of the patches for 2.1. GPS performance has been reported as a lot better by many people with 2.2. Many (myself included) report the best performance when you turn the GPS through the menus rather than the dropdown menu.
I bought my Fascinate locally via private sale as well and just asked the seller to meet me at the Verizon store so that we could confirm that the ESN was good and the phone hasn't been reported stolen. If the seller isn't willing to do that, I wouldn't buy it.
