Will the android 2.2 update reset my phone to stock (i.e. have to download all my apps again)?

Does having a lot of things stored on my phone memory (vs. on SD card) reduce phone performance?

The official OTA will not wipe your data. That said, it's always a good idea to keep backups, as bad things can always happen. Check out MyBackup for a good nonrooted backup option.

As for performance, it shouldn't affect it at all unless you are doing heavy read/write. Personally, I'd keep media on your SD card, and if you use it a lot, consider getting a faster card to improve performance.
