2.2 slow icon refresh

same here...I first thought it was with flash, but I deleted it and it still exist, so I reloaded flash. Regarding Flash, I wish it could be faster through 3g, but I understand the issues....Now waiting for work to turn on its wifi.

For the few that have no apps on the SD card, how loaded up with other stuff is your SD card? I'm having the issue too. I have no apps on my card, but it is pretty loaded up with other crap. I'm gonna try and clear it off and see what happens. I'll start with my music and report back.

UPDATE: I've cleared off my SD card -- wiped out about 10GB of music -- and have been using it for just under an hour. I make no promises, but it seems insanely snappier at pretty much everything. I'll monitor for 24 hours and report back again.

What is the point in having an SD card if you're not going to keep your music and such on it?

The problem may be that the phone is hanging up on writing app data cache to the phone. Because my card was almost completely full it had fewer locations to write to and therefore slower write times. However, when I cleared the card off, now it has all sorts of space and options.

The issue may be possible to fix by buying a higher class card. Mine is a class 2 card. Maybe a class 4 would fix this? I have heard a couple of complaints about poor video recording on the X. I think in all cases they had a class 2 card while users not experiencing this had a class 4 card.

Not what I meant. Why have a phone that does cool things like play music if you can't store music on the phone. You said you deleted 10 GB of music. The phone doesn't need 10GB of free space to write cache data, and it isn't going to write it to the SD card anyhow. If it is, then we have bigger problems because the people writing the OS code are idiots.

I don't think it's the OS caching anything on the card. However, I have noticed a significant number of my apps do cache data on the card rather than the phone. I'm pretty sure the times I've been having the lag problems that it has been while exiting these specific apps. I do understand what you're saying though. Why have the space available if you can't use it without causing issues.

I see what you're saying now. The only problem I have with your theory (but I'm not saying you're wrong--but this is why you *may* be :D) is that I never had this problem before the 2.2 update. The apps haven't changed. Obviously there have been some big changes to the OS, such as the new changes that supposedly make it faster. So it could be that they change the way things are done when exiting apps.

edit: As a test, I just rebooted my phone. The first thing I did was pull the keyboard out and BAM ... no icons. This is very aggravating.

Another thing--do you see this when sliding out the keyboard? All that does it switch the landscape to portrait and vice versa, so that sorta throws a wrench into the system too. Flipping the display should be a relatively painless and quick process--at least it was before 2.2

I gotcha. Things I obviously hadn't considered :D. As far as the keyboard goes, I have no idea. I've honestly never used the darn thing and don't plan to any time soon. I tried it just now and it seems fine, but that means nothing. I'll continue to monitor and report back tomorrow. Also, just to see what kind of impact it may have, I may buy a class 4 card and try it out. If things become significantly faster, this may not be the source of our issues, but possibly something that's masking the issue from sight.

I'll look forward to your findings.

Reporting back in. While the phone does seem quite a bit faster, the icon load time is still suffering. I'm starting to wonder if this might be a bug in the modified JIT compiler in 2.2. I'd be curious to know if nexus one owners are having the same issue.

Having the same problem after the 2.2 update. Switching to landscape or sometimes exiting out of apps. Kinda agravating. Also I have noticed that when I restart the phone that my ringtone that I have for my messages and gmail go to silent and I cannot turn them back on. I have tones through zedge. I have to redownload them.

I too have the same problem, I have tried all of the previous ideas for fixing it but still didnt change anything...phone is constantly lagging when going back to home screen. I am really disappointed with this OTA update. It has made my phone worse. Can someone please point me to the root section from 2.2 Thanks

Same problem here. I also had the problem before the update, but it happened much less frequently (seemed like it only really happened when I exited the Pandora App.)

Turned off animations that that didn't help. A few times I've gotten the FC message and reported it to Google.

Okay... Another breif update. System performance post SD card clearing still seems quite good. However, I'm going to have to agree with Bilbravo that app caching on the SD card is NOT the source of this issue. I'm still having occasional slowness when returning to the home screen from an app.

I did some additional experimentation this morning. I exited an app this morning and ended up on a blank screen waiting for the icons and widgets to reload. Since there is a quick launch button for the web browser handly available from the home screen -- along with dialer and app tray -- I decided to launch the browser while I waited. I discovered that the browser was extremely slow to load. This is affecting the entire phone's performance. The phone itself is becoming bogged down upon exiting apps or flipping to the hardware keyboard.

Thanks for the updates slider.

I think I am going to do a factory refresh. Has anyone had success with that?

Has anyone NOT had this problem at all? I'd be interested if other people just aren't noticing it (b/c they are rooted) or if it has something to do with our setups.

Just adding some info here: running latest 2.2 rooted stock rom from p3droid....cleared cache....I have a class 6 sd card and still get slow icon refresh everytime I open keyboard...uninstalled launcher pro, have 2 gigs free on sd card, minimal services running,....

I also just forced 2.2

I do notice the icons still disappear and re-appear (more quickly, however) when I open or close the keyboard. I have not noticed it yet when exiting an application. The phone does feel snappier overall. We'll see what happens after a few days of use.

I'm ruling out a hardware flaw as the issue here. Got sick of the issue. I rooted my phone and installed Liquid Frozen Yogurt 1.5 ROM on my phone -- which I believe is based on the FRG22 source -- and have not had the problem since. This is almost certainly a flaw in the FRG01B update. It'll be interesting to see if this latest OTA push resolve the issue for everyone.

So far it hasn't resolved it for me. Perhaps out of apps, but I still get it when switching the keyboard open.

How do you like LFY 1.5? Does it allow overclocking easily?

I'm really liking it. Rooted with LFY and CPU set to 800 MHz I'm getting around 1100 for a score in Quadrant. It operates pretty slick, though still a bit glitchy now and then.

As far as OC, there are a couple of kernels specifically for OCing that build. I've not tried them out yet, but I hear they work pretty good.

Also, SetCPU is a must have. The ability to set speed profiles based on situations is excellent. I'm a pretty low usage person, but used to charge my phone daily as the battery would be at 20% by days end. I've just passed the 24hr mark without charging and my battery is still at 40% w/ my CPU downclocked to 250 MHz in sleep mode.

EDIT: I just flashed the LFY 1000 kernel on my phone. All I have to say is.... DAMN!!! THAT'S FAST!!!

Do you by chance frequent the arstechnica website and/or comment there?

Um... I know I've read some articles there. I'm not sure whether I have an account there or commented before though. If I have, I'd show up as ewplayer3 or slider5634... Why do you ask?
