2.2 update and battery life

Ok, so I updated via Kies Mini yesterday and I am seeing something that concerns me. My battery life is draining much more quickly than on 2.1. Any ideas why this might me and what I can do to fix it?

I've had the same experience with the "leaked" version that was released about 2 months ago.

I updated mine to 2.2, and the battery life has been horrible. Yesterday it died after eight hours off the charger, and all I did was send maybe 10-15 text messages and received a few emails. Today it's been unplugged for only three hours so far, and the charge is already down to 50%.

I've had mine off of the charger sense 5:40 this morning and I still have 79% battery life left after 5 hours. Thats with watching a youtube video and listening to music while I showered. Not sure what I'm doing differently from you guys.

Not necessarily. I'm running a rooted 2.2 and its not any better than what everyone here is describing. I'm not running any custom kernels, just the stock 2.2 with root access.

I would suggest that you have a couple of options:

1. Root the phone, load Titanium Backup, freeze some apps you definitely don't use. Level of improvement=slight or possibly not noticable.

2. Root the phone, flash a custom ROM and/or custom kernel that addresses the battery life issue. (I have not checked XDA in a while, no idea if there are any available yet for the "official" release) Level of improvement=unknown

3. Learn to live with it until there is another official firmware update. Level of improvement=none

4. Downgrade to 2.1. Level of improvement=battery life improves, other functionality does not.

I know there is a lot of debate on the Advanced Task Killer topic, but I've been using it and I think it works great. Besides checking and killing Apps I also make sure the phone's running services only has what I want running

Its actually not really a debate. Some people just don't want to believe that ATK's are not really all that useful when it gets right down to it.

Just because I don't want to believe that the sun will come up tomorrow, doesn't mean its debatable.

I cruised over to XDA for a little bit, there are a couple of options built on this upgrade (EC10) that are supposedly an improvement over the build I am running. These options do require root, and they do require you to be pretty familiar with making changes to your phone's software. If you choose to download any of them, take the time to read a lot about what will be required. If I can get the time to do it myself any time soon, I will report any of my findings.

my battery life was worse than 2.1 but not horrible, i could still get thru a whole day but i'd have less battery left than i'd like. so i downloaded juice defender and it works quite good. i have 30 percent battery left and it's been unplugged for 15 hours. did a decent amount of texting and 20 min of calling, 8 hours of it were in a low signal area. than spent an hour and a half browsing the web and reading rss feeds. so i'm pretty happy with juice defender, but want to really test it out on a normal day. accidently left an app running that drained the battery a decent amount and sometimes leave the browser up which keeps 3g on as well being in low service areas. battery life seems very good with me.'

EDIT: only downside to juice defender is you won't get emails until the data turns back on. which for me is usually ok

I called US cellular and they said Juice defender will solve the problem......hmmmmmmmm

Any feedback on this program?

Understand that if you call US Cellular to ask them about what is basically either a Samsung problem or an Android problem, they are not likely to give you a solution that will actually help the problem. They're going to throw something up against the wall (toss out a random app like "juice defender" solution or "uninstall/reinstall" solution) and see if it sticks (you hang up the phone and don't call them back to say it didn't work.)

Juice Defender may help you. But you're putting a bandaid on a gunshot wound. It might feel better for a few minutes, but eventually you'll realize you're still bleeding pretty bad and you haven't gotten proper medical attention...

now been 19 hours since unplugged. with another 20 min phone call, more texting, pic messaging, and using the camera and camcorder i am now down to 5 percent.

I know juice defender is a bandaid but 2.2 on all devices that i know of is slightly worse battery life than 2.1. even if i went back to 2.1 i would still use juice defender just because i hate my battery dying on me and this definately helps

I updated my phone too, my battery life went to 5 hours with out even using it, I also found I lost several options in settings and my phone would freeze or crash, went back to the old operating system and now I can use my phone, internet etc, and still leave it off the charger for a few days before needing a charge, the new update isn't worth it to me,I need battery life

i really think you guys with the bad battery life need to just backup and wipe your phone. my stepdads with 2.1 out of the box was absolutely terrible, finally i got him to wipe it and now he has zero complaints about it. if your afraid of losing data from games or certain apps, you could literally root your phone in 2 min, use titanium to make a real backup and another minute to unroot with superoneclick. it's not just these phones that have a problem when updating to 2.2, some phones just have bad battery life when updating. like i said before, mine wasnt nearly as bad as those of you complaining, and that's without juice defender.
