2.2 Update and Mobile Access Point

Currently taking advantage of the unofficial Froyo 2.2 using Mobile Access Point for Wifi tethering. This is great but my phone is a little sluggish my GPS hasn't worked since the day I got it, August, 2010. AT&T will send me a replacement phone and I am sure it will have the official AT&T 2.2 release.

Of course I will be rooting the new phone. It is my device and I believe I should have admin rights to it. My main concern is the Mobile access Point feature will be locked down. With the official 2.2 update they require you to sign up for their tethering package. That's two internet packages for one device. This seems a little unfair in a lot of ways. Is there currently a way around this to still do Wifi Tethering. I use it a lot with my Xoom WIFI.

Basically I deal with a broken GPS to have Wifi Tethering.

Actually I think I found my answer. It looks as if I can just bypass the Android Mobile Access Point and start using the Google Wifi App. Will have to Root the phone first. Waiting for my new phone to come in.

I couldn't find the google wifi app on the market. Does this one have to be sideloaded or is there a barcode you can post here for it? I plan on using the MAP this wednesday for work while I wait for the internet guy to come to my new apartment and don't wanna risk getting nailed for it. Also planning on getting either a wifi only Xoom or G-Slate sometime in the next couple of months (feel free to let me know what you think about the Xoom as well).

give cognition a look. its stock without the bs and stuff just works

Cognition isn't just stock with everything removed. It is close to stock, but it is a custom ROM that requires you to flash your phone. If you want to be able to tether without flashing, just rooting the stock ROM, the wireless tether code from Google is the way to go.

I agree with your take on Cognition, but I would say it's easier after rooting to get rid of the tethering manager and just use the built in mobile AP-why bother with the wireless tether from google

Is the Mobile AP functional after just rooting? I never used Mobile AP until after I had already flashed a custom ROM, so I don't know.

Another thought: Would it be a good idea to not use the native wifi tethering app on a rooted stock ROM phone, just in case AT&T has the app reporting back that tethering is being used? Could that have been how they caught the jailbroken iPhones that were tethering?

I ended up just flashing to Cognition and using the mobile AP option in settings for my tethering needs yesterday as I waited for my internet installation in the afternoon. I had previously been running Serendipity 5.11 and for some reason the Mobile AP wouldn't work for me on that iteration, so I went back to Cognition (4.3 this time though; I was on 3.04 before I flashed to Serendipity 5.11).

Now that I've got me wifi at home up and running, I won't need to use the mobile AP until I'm out and about somewhere without wifi access and need to d/l something on a tablet.

Yea it does. Not sure how ATT detected the Iphone tethering. It wasn't from any ATT built in app though afaik. I believe it was something called mi-fi or something. Anyway, I think the jury is still out on how ATT can detect tethering on an android..or period

I don't know how AT&T can figure it out but I think they caught on to me. I rooted my phone and froze tethering manager (easiest way for me) and used mobile ap without a hitch for a while. I hooked up my Wii and watched netflix all the time and used 20 gigs of data in one month. Guessing that might have flagged me. Anyway, my mobile ap no longer works at all. Does anyone have a clue as to how AT&T can be omnipitant enough to shut me down when the tethering reporting app is frozen? I found a few other ways to tether but I would still like to know. It's bugging the crap out me.
