2.2 update killed advanced task killer!

lets face it, this is a topic that has been raging since androids beginning and is bound to continue. there are countless arguments for both sides. i place my faith in my own droids performance as should you. the "meaty" proof for me is in the increased functionality and battery life i gain without an atk.

yep, he is credible no doubt and more knowledgeable on such topics than I.

BUT.... Thus, I am a TK believer until I get more substantial and meaty proof as the utility of a TK is as logical, even more so, then buying into Droid's method of handling resources.

I agree that we all rooted just because we said, "Android is good, but I can get it better by making it more personal" I never understood why people insist that memory management wouldn't work the same way.

In that vein, I suggest you check out Auto Killer since it lets you tweak the system setting themselves (alot of good documentation of the dev's site). These root apps let you change when Android's own native taskiller kicks in, but it is FAR more finely grained then ATK tends to be. Also Since you are changeing Android itself apps are far less likely to just reload, because you are not "Force Closing" them anymore

O and it has a traditional task killer tab for those pesky apps that are causing problems, and refuse to die.

ATK for me is a waste of time

last time I used it on my droid it cause more problems than it did good

as soon as I deleted it my phone ran fine.

they are not needed for the android os

All I can say is that when google maps or some other app tries to run gps/cellular or whatever in the background for two hours straight you will want something to kill it with...just saying my battery has been raped more than once by something like that happening.

we can certainly agree on this.

like to see you put that in writing :) the more anecdotal evidence from people that come right out and say it, the more credibility it has to me. but 1 thing.. did you allow ATK to kill for you or did you do it manually like I do? I think that point matters but it seems to get glossed over in these conversations just what settings people use and why they may see a perf benefit by bailing on it.

just for giggles and knowing lock-n-load will truly take the time to read it. not because i wanna get back into this discussion as i have been there done that if you will. this is a good read and video including but not limited to an article from saphires dev:

Task Killers... The Answer from Google & Developers. - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

now we're talking. this is the type of stuff I like to see. I hate the reason "uh, just because" so a full diatribe of info from a person that has deeper knowledge and feels strongly enough to post that level of a post.. that is worth reading and taking to heart.. I make no promise I will buy into what he is selling, but I will read it all and consider it into my mix :)

hmm... where exactly did you confirm that in 2.2 a TK is not needed? I am a fan and TK user. As we know, VZW would often load and suggest ATK. So when/where did it become known that 2.2 stopped making having a TK useful. If anything, I notice SO many more apps running in the background under 2.2. Apps that are never used or called upon. No reason to open the ATK debate here as that has been done, but I am curious where it is said to no longer needed in 2.2 as many said the same in 2.01 and 2.1. what changed?

and BTW - I notice more battery use in 2.2 and both Spare Parts and Phone > Battery user don't show me any culprits. Same services as the past are the big users, nothing new is sucking battery but I do notice less battery life. Culprit? Maybe the 15 app's it continually starts up in the BG?

so an app that you used and liked and thought highly enough to use "until" you went to 2.2 you went back and dropped ratings on because you went to 2.2? you docked the dev for what exactly??? how are they on the hook?

Sort of OT, I took my original Droid in months ago before the 30 days because the speaker would crackle during phone calls. The tech tried to get me to install ATK to fix the problem. I was like wtf is that going to do? Long story short I demanded a brand new out-of-the-box Droid and got it right then and there.

Those VZW employees are just full of crap

Give 2.2 a chance before u use a task killer again. I find it's to be less sluggish not that don't manual kill a task or two every now and then.

funny... the author of that article says he has a TK installed and says he uses kind of like I do - manually. The only other difference, I might kill all running tasks in the background whereas he kills only unresponsive apps. So, I was pretty much on the right track and I will keep my TK but I will curtail its manual use and see if it changes anything.

As I said above, mine has never been set to auto kill apps. That might be where people get into issues and report better perf when they remove a TK when in fact, they should have just reconsidered using the auto kill function and just gone to the manual kill function.

so, it seems the author does not say 2.2 needs a TK any less that 2.1 or 2.0.1, so not sure why that info continues to float around exactly?

in the end, the point is, I would say... a TK is a fine thing to have IF (1) it is not set to auto kill apps (2) it is only used manually for apps causing issues (3) you do not use it to kill all running apps - I am certainly guilty if #3 so I plan to keep and continue to have my TK on my phone, but only go to it now to kill if #2 arises and not just go to it to kill all apps loaded in the background like I did.

I do not use any task killer.I pr ess the back key until it goes to the ho me screen. All applications close. I am using Apex 9.1 on samsung captivate. Very good battery duration.
