Root 2.3.9 with bootloader version 30.01

Searching the internet and this site in particular, I see that many people are asking questions about how to get from the leaked Android 2.2 OS to the OTA. I'm new to this and I see lots of different build numbers, answers, risks of bricking, etc. Frankly, I'm nervous to do the wrong thing. Your input would be appreciated.

Here's what I know about my phone:
Android - 2.3.9 MB810
Boot loader 30.01
Kernel 2.6.32.9-gfb07887

If I understand properly, because I have the 30.01 version of the boot loader, I can go directly to 2.2, right?

Should I follow these instructions? Is there any way to avoid losing my data?

Are you on original stock froyo?
in your system updates try pulling the update to your phone. That should bring you current.
