Very simple:

Totally fed up with phone. No idea how to update and don't want to risk mucking it up.

Is there going to be an automatic update to 2.3 for my desire? and when...thanks

If I recall correctly, no.

I really don't understand why everyone's complaining, it's not like the 2.3 update will double the processor power or anything..

Its not an OTA. Its released as "for developers only" on the htcdev.com website. It runs as an RUU (Rom Upgrade utility) from your windows pc. You run it and follow the instructions. It wipes your phone of all data and apps.

I'm not a developer, so this rules me out.

How would I get 2.3 then? Or at least get more disk space, make my phone faster etc? Without deleting some of the stuff on my phone (which really isn't alot of stuff in the first place)

Well they say that to cover themselves to justify not releasing it fully, possibly because they just can't be bothered any more.

It's a simple process and the only way to get official 2.3

sounds even better then.

what benefits do you get after the upgrade? more internal memory usage?

Better performance
Faster boot time
More free internal memory
Better battery life
Debranded handset, get rid of some specific Telco Operator crap app's
It's free and easy to do-it-yourself !
It's for everybody. not only for developers !

Do a backup of your data before upgrade !:)

how much internal memory increase from the measily 147MB please?

none whatsoever..

you don't 'gain' more internal so to speak, the app pushing to the SD card, that was original started with the 2.2 Froyo update, is more refined in Gingerbread...but it wont magically give you a 100mb or so extra...

hell even us rooted and custom rom users still have a small internal (thats why we use custom roms with a2sd or dat2sd to install onto the SD)
