Help 2 questions: 3G connection and theme

Hi all, I only have the Droid X for a couple months so I don't know a lot about the phone. Here are my 2 simple questions please:

1. My work building doesn't have good signal and when I step outside the building it take at least a few minutes for it to find a 3G connection. Is this normal? Is there a way to tell it to "switch the signal on" and connect faster?

2. Coming from a BlackBerry, where you can just change the theme of the phone without hacking it, I was looking into Go Launcher, but it seems that you have to download a different "app" for everything, like contacts, sms, calendar, etc. And Launcher Pro only changes the theme of the homescreen. Is there a way to easily change the look of the Droid X without rooting/hacking and/or downloading different "launchers"?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

You'll need to root to install a different theme. If you're on the latest Gingerbread version, you'd need to sbf back to Froyo, root, and install the rooted GB update. THEN you'd want to create a backup in recovery to have something to return to before installing a theme (in case you don't like it) :D.

The directions to sbf and update to GB are stickied at the top of the root section.
