Help 2 Questions about 3G

It seems as though my D1 has been losing 3G reception more often since the 2.2.1 update. Dropping to 1x and even to nothing at all while in my office usually late night. Before 2.2.1 I would drop coverage occassionally, maybe like 1 or 2 times a month, but now it's almost nightly. My questions are 1. Does Verizon run some kind of maintenance at night on their towers that would cause me to have problems? and 2. I am completely stock except for being rooted using the steps from here . Does just being rooted affect reception at all?
