1. My phone just recently started dying VERY rapidly. I take it off the charger and the battery is half dead about an hour later. It usually doesn't last very long but this is much worse. What could be causing this?

2. The marketplace says that 5/6 of my apps need to be upgraded, but everytime I try to do it, it says it failed and then tells me my memory is low and won't let me do ANYTHING until i delete all my threads and uninstall all my apps. What gives?

1. I installed a really crappy IM application once that drained my battery like crazy because it was polling the servers every few seconds. Go into the application management area of the settings and see what's running and if you have anything there that shouldn't be.

2. Your memory may simply be full. The ally doesn't have very much memory to begin with so you need to be mindful of what you install and where. Just yesterday I dealt with this same issue with my cousin. She thought because she only had a "few" applications she should be fine. I had her grab a calculator and we ran the math and 5mb here and 16mb there really does nickel and dime the system.

Now that 2.2 is out you can move a lot of 3rd party stuff to the SD card and free up phone space. This is done in the application management area of the settings. Once I showed her how to move things to the SD card it freed up a lot of space and made her much happier.

NOTE: I am by no means an expert in any stretch of the imagination. Considering the battery issue is a major issue I would say this calls for a visit to the irc chat area. There is almost always someone there than can either help or point you in the right direction to find help. The chat area is hardly ever a bad choice really.

Hello
Did you recently install any "Data Hungry" apps? Did you start using the phone more rapidly? Do you leave wifi on? If none of those are true then it sounds like you got yourself a bad battery...... Fear not if its still under warranty* the call Verizon and tell them you have a bad battery and they will send you a new one for FREE.... Trust me Iv had to do this before.....

I'm assuming you have the stock ROM correct? I noticed before I went to velocity the battery life was horrible..... I use my phone a lot now and my battery last more than 12 hours now.......

Like the poster above me said there isn't alot of space on the phone..... transfer some to the SD card..... you can do this the way the poster said but I recommend using a nice app called app2sd its free and Lets you know if the app can be transfered to the SD as some apps require to be on the phone....

* Warranty is one year.... if you rooted your phone it is still "under warranty"........ Especially under this case as you don't need to send the phone in...... and theres always the option of unrooting.....

It usually seems that bad battery life is due to widgets running, like wifi, gps, screen brightness etc. Could also be a bad battery. Cache Cleaner NG from the market will clear some cache and maybe help with memory issues in combination with moving apps to your sd.
