What's the screen lift I keep hearing about?

A relatively small issue where the left side of the screen ever so slightly lifts where you can notice it depress when you push it.

Honestly, a dab of superglue fixed it for me. Others returned it and got a different one.

You can do everything with a tablet you can do with a phone except make normal calls and texts.

You can listen to movies, play games, ext.

Tablets excel as media devices and can also be used for productivity for things like taking notes if you get a Bluetooth keyboard

I'm looking into buying my first tablet, what can you do with a tablet? Could I upload music on to it, etc?

Essentially, a tablet is a larger smartphone without the phone functionality. Similar to how the iPod Touch or Galaxy Players work. Given the rather anemic nature of typical smartphone batteries, a tablet can be useful for heavy media consumption (music, videos, photo storage, whatever), streaming (YouTube, Netflix, etc.), web browsing, and some word processing WITHOUT taking your phone out of commission, if you should find yourself in need of an actual phone call.
Assuming you don't mind carrying 2 devices with you, of course.

I've read others replies about gaming and media, but that's not my main purpose. In conjunction with my phone, it's mobile productivity without toting a laptop around. It can't do everything a laptop can, but email, conferencing, desktop/server remote access, etc. can be done with the right apps. This keeps me connected to the world, I can perform many functions from my tablet with wifi. I can use my phone as wifi to tether to, if I'm out of a normal wifi access point.

No concern now if I need to take a bit longer at lunch or be available after hours.

I can, I am.
