Help 3D camera speculations: what new possibilities?

The reason for 5MP cameras instead of 8MP was, likely more than anything, because of cost and not technical limitations.

The better the images are, the better the stereo will be. That is why Kodachrome 25 was far better than Ektachrome for stereo. You could detect the larger grain structure between Kodachrome 25 and Kodachrome 64, as well.

Sharpness is vital because in stereo, little imperfections matter.
 
I've definitely changed my stance from what I said earlier in this thread, after seeing fattank post the "middle" composite picture of my stereo pair in another thread:

Traditional HDR requires a stationary subject, different exposure times, and a stable camera. If you can do this with the E3D and then apply the algorithm fattank used to merge, HDR should work. I'm still unclear if the resulting image could be a 3D HDR shot, though I'd be happy with the 2D HDR.

A better 2D image seems doable now, and we really wouldn't need to modify the phone. Just take a shot in 3D, extract the stereo pair, and apply the merge. It's conceivable that one could write an app to automate this process though.

Remember that the Evo creates two different views. Different perspective; the images are not equal. Therefore, if you overlay the images, you have a image quality issue because the images are indeed different.

I would have agreed with Bob on this one until I played around with HDR Camera+ which actually takes three images, combines them and does a very impressive job of compensating for movement in the shot. I would think it would be possible to create an algorithm to compensate for the perspective if you were to use the "double-shot" as your upper and lower brackets and the single shot for the correct exposure.
 
A range finder should be doable. It would just boil down to the Pythagorean theorem, and we know the separation of the cameras. What I'm envisioning is something that separates the stereoscopic image and then lays them over each other as ghost images. You could then pinch in and out to line up the two images at the point which you would like to measure.

If any of you skilled android devs use this idea, just make sure you give me some credit ;-)


The range finders I know about (Graflex/Speed Graphic/Linhof View Cameras are extremely accurate. Surely, anything done many years ago, can be done with Wiz-Bang high techs of today.

Your idea about ghost images superimposed over a solid image is exactly how many rangefinders (in cameras) work. Focus until the images are aligned and there you go.

If these idiot camera makers would just add a tripod socket to their phones, you can purchase camera rangefinders that would likely fit your device. And you do not need a 3D phone, either.
