3G connectivity

I have just bought a (used) HTC Desire, and despite having the mobile network enabled in the wireless and networks tab of settings I am not connected to 3G, but the GPRS in use icon is displayed, and disappears when I switch off the mobile network. It picks up the wireless signal from my router fine.Does this just mean I'm not getting a 3G signal at my home location? Sorry if the answer is obvious but this is my first smart phone. Thanks.

Friend's phones get a good 3G signal here, I live near London so it shouldn't be a problem.I have only just had the Sim card activated by the network- would I need codes for data or something?

All is well, I can get H 300m away from here, I've no idea why I am in a blackspot when I am next to the busiest road in the U.K.I assumed I would get a good 3G signal evreywhere close to London- naive of me, I now know.Sorry if I wasted your time with a dumb question!
I am now back to learning my phone, so be prepared for more queries :)
