Help 3g off?

Can someone tell me how to keep from using 3g until I WANT to use it? I have it disabled but it still kicks on when my WiFi kicks off.
 
Just to clarify, I assume you mean Data/Internet as opposed to 3G? If this is the case and you have turned off Data Traffic then your handset should not be able to access any data based function.

do u mean when you switch off data sync and your emails and stuff are still going on? because theres still background data that runs anyway. how are you turning it off?
 
Yea even if you turn off sync you will still have background data going on. Ive seen some widgets on the market for switching it on/off but havent tried any of them.

Edit: are you going to :

Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Data Enabled?

I just bothered to look. I had only seen accounts and sync. It turned off my data now. No 3g at all.
 
Yeah that's where I went. Data is off but when I logged into skype it showed it was on in the status bar.

This is more likely a glitch on the Skype end of things as if you have Data Traffic disabled you handset can not connect to a data service. That is unless you have an active WiFi connection.
