3g on my phone out of nowhere?

I have had my phone for almost 8 months now. I never showed 3g and now I get it all the time. Its important to know I use the disable 4g code. so when I show 3g its in cdma mode. It does not look like I can actually use 3g though, as the internet still does not work, yet it indicates data is transferring.

Metro is updating the prl on the phones to 3026. That prl has 3g, so all customers will start seeing the 3g icon on their phones.

so will the update give me 3g access? I tried the *228 and there is no option for 2. option 5 says update roaming list, is that what I want?
