Root 3g only with cyanogen?

I'm having trouble recieving picture messages on my captivate. Every time i try to download a picture that someone sends to me, it just says downloading, and never completes. I noticed that it does work, but only when I have data enabled. I was wondering if the "2g only" option in cyanogenmod will still allow me to send/recieve text and picture messages. Or if anyone knows another way to solve this problem please help. I only have the 200mb plan, and i'm afraid to leave data on, because i'm afraid that some random app i might DL will try to sync all the time and use up my data. It's happened to me already and used up like 75% of my data overnight.

mms messages have to download using mobile data, it doesnt matter if its 2g or 3g

yes you have to have network data turned on for mms. even when i had a crappy phone years ago, and was on my moms phone plan, she turned off data for my line, and it disallowed the transfer of mms messages. they go throught the network service, rather than the internet in general. so its neeeded
