3rd Party ROM: MoDaCo. Pros and Cons

Sydney99

Android Expert
I thought it may be extremely useful for people who are contemplating going over to a 3rd party ROM what the good and bad points are, comparisons to official ROM etc.

May also be useful to state which 3rd party kernel (if applicable) seems to work well with it.

Can you start off with which version of the ROM your using with which firmware it is based on, followed by your findings.

MoDaCo Rom. The Rom used by the Godfather himself (ie. Slug) - if it's good enough for him, surely this Rom deserves it's own thread too.......

Other 3rd Party ROMS are commented on in the threads below (please start new threads for any other ROMS that you wish to comment on):
Villain
Lite'ning
Cognition S2 (thanks to steslatt)
SicOpaT
Revolution ROM Link

Many thanks to all that contribute

Sheesh, I know I'm old but still..... :D

Based on (currently):

  • XXKH3 (Android 2.3.4)
"A MCR release is designed to feel as far as possible like a stock ROM, with optimisations, tweaks and complimentary additions that enhance the user experience. The aim of a MCR is to be ultra reliable for use on an everyday device." (Paul O'Brien, developer)

Pros:
  • Same look and feel as stock
  • Deodexed, zipaligned, optimised for max performance
  • BLN-compatible (optional)
  • Fully-updated Google apps inc. GVoice and GTalk video chat
  • Stable
Cons:
  • Same look and feel as stock :)
  • Updates are less frequent than most (see dev's statement above)
  • Full 'kitchen' only available via subscription/donation
Kernels:
  • MoDaCo Custom Kernel (standard - BLN-compatible, no overclock/voltage control)
  • Ninphetamine 2.xx kernels also work very nicely with this ROM
Other stuff:

  • Themes & mods: any built for deodexed KH3 ROMs should work.
  • GR6 release is currently in development

The first custom ROM I flashed to an Android device was the first MCR beta build for the HTC Hero. Paul's ROMs may not be speed demons or packed with eye candy but they invariably work and prove reliable.

I think I read on the MoDaCo forum that Paul had fixed the server problem. The "free" kitchen is intended to be just that - no need to pay for anything.

Anyway got the itch to download the file. I got 1 step further and got the anti spam input. Then sorry you can only download 1 file at a time. Don't get me wrong membership's only $9. What's
