4.0.3 update?

Trust me it isn't even close to what a normal VZW phone comes with in terms of bloat. Hell my TBolt had almost a gig worth of useless bloat apps (most of them just links to download the paid version). Also both of the apps that VZW included can be removed with out rooting, that is something that would have come directly from Google. VZW would have never allowed that unless forced.
I'm probably nitpicking, but you can't actually remove those apps without rooting, you can only disable them. Which is still way, way more freedom than Verizon would typically allow their users to have.

But I totally agree with your overall point. I was pissed by City ID, Verizon Navigation and other bloatware taking up precious space on my DInc. Well, until I rooted, anyway.

Yea you are correct, you can't remove them, only disable them. However it has the same effect, minus the space of course. And yea it is a lot better then what VZW has allowed in the past. :)

I will try to briefly explain device update processes and why they take so long and the advantages the Nexus has.

A normal device Android update has the following waiting periods: 1. Wait for Google to release/push new version of Android. 2. Phone manufacturer(HTC, Samsung, Motorola, etc..) customizes this software to their liking and makes sure it is compatible with all of a given phone's features, also bug testing. 3. Carrier/Verizon does their own lengthy scrutinizing process to ensure it meets certain quality standards. If it fails, it goes back to step 2.

The international GSM Galaxy Nexus(and all previous Nexus devices) only has step 1. The Verizon Galaxy Nexus still has step 1 and step 3. It will be faster to get new versions of Android than anything else(save the GSM GN) still just because you're not spending months waiting on Samsung/Motorola/HTC to customize. I hope this clears things up.

As of writing this, Google is holding the update back, not Verizon. If Google had released the update for the Galaxy Nexus, the GSM international version would have it now.

So I've said all along 'how do we know these updates will come direct from Google'. If what you're saying is accurate, then we will NOT be getting updates 'direct from Google'...not if they have to all go to Verizon first. Everyone initially said 'no, direct from Google direct from Google'. It always amazes me how people are 100% certain about something before it even materializes.

I almost got my head bit off by some when I suggested this!

I have never seen a statement from google or vzw that support this, or even the aforementioned "google is skipping right to 4.1" statement.

Sure I've seen random people in forums that I don't know trying to pass this off as fact. Care to point the community in the right direction here to support these statements?

TIA!

Yup! It's these same 'definitive' statements prior to the Nexus' release that made people believe all updates would be 'direct from Google' with the clear inference that it would not have to pass through anyone else before release. Wrong.

Droid X updates came from google SERVERS. But there might have been an approval process from VZW.

Bottom line, update now or face mass returns, lol. Or in reality, I don't think that anyone knows the approval process that can publicly state how it works with this specific phone!

Sure there's lots of speculation, but when you ask for facts or verification, nothing happens.:D:D

It's not wrong, it is a Nexus phone updates for every other Nexus phone have come directly from Google, until that is proven to change I'm going to believe how it has been done in the past. We have seen a couple people post in this forum that before their phone was even activated on the VZW network they got the update to 4.0.2. That means it had to come directly from the Google servers.

+1... because after speaking to a rep friend of mine at vzw he said that the updates come from google and they don't really have any control of how and when it gets released in a technical sense.

I mean look at it like this. I have a driod x and a bionic and am on moto test group. I would get their updates without any facilitation from vzw. And in the end, it was moto who pushes the updates in batches to everyone else if feedback is good. Seeing as this phone only has two vzw apps which they can update through market why would they need prior approval after initial launch. If anything vzw has to update their apps with current software in order to maintain security after google pushes new release.

But that's just my take. Not an expert here.

Keep in mind this is the first Nexus from VZW. This changes everything. ;)

The main reason I say VZW is going to have no say in this phone software, is the fact that they just updated the NFL Mobile app 2 days ago... lol...

In all seriousness though I do see were you are coming from with the VZW thing. I just think that this phone is different then what you have seen from VZW in the past.

I am thinking of getting a Nexus, after reading thread still confused where updates come from? Verizon or google?

Main reason to get it is so i am always up to date but if Verizon has a hand in it I doubt we will ever get timely updates

Even if updates do go through Verizon (either directly or indirectly via an approval process), I still think the updates will be very timely. Certainly way more timely than any skinned phones like the Razr, Rezound, etc. I wouldn't worry too much about it. And there are always 3rd party ROMs that can fill a need you may have or provide an update early (based on the AOSP source) while VZW is still testing things. Case in point, there are folks running a 4.0.3 ROM and it's not been released yet by VZW/google. If this is your only hold up on the Nexus, I would tell you to run, not walk, to your nearest VZW store or retailer and buy it! :)

To shed some light via precedent:

My Nexus One updates came OTA from T-mobile.

But if I wanted I could have downloaded the update.zip from Google. It's the same file and they worked together to produce the update.

I'd imagine the same will be true here. I'm sure they all have to sign off on things, including Samsung. But as jkc120 said, they are likely to be very, very timely despite having several companies that are required to approve.
