Help 4.4 Update issues/discussion

Hi all,

My partner and I both have the Max.

Software update (4.4.2) pushed OTA to both devices yesterday.

One is perfectly fine, the other now has an issue.

If you leave the phone 'sitting', the screen will dim. It will lock. But it won't turn the screen off - simply sits dimly lit.

The only way to completely darken the screen is to power-button-lock it.

No biggy - we usually tap the power button before it goes into pockets anyway.

But, it means that if the power button is tapped by accident, the screen stays in on-state until it's noticed, sometimes hours at a time.

Usually battery is still on 80-90% at the end of the day mostly in standby, but now it's down to around 20% due to the additional screen time.

Have checked the usual settings, restarted, reset etc, but no luck.

Any ideas besides installing a 3rd party app to control screen blank using the proximity sensor?

Thanks in advance,

its always suggested that a factory reset be applied after major updates, this being one of them.

things can get tangled during these updates--app cache can get mucked up, other issues can crop up, etc etc and so forth.

this sounds like you may have some random rogue issues that may only be cured by a factory reset.

does not matter if one phone works and the other one doesnt--different phone environments/setup prior to the update being applied.

clearing app cache, soft rebooting, turning fastboot off, changing lock screens, removing the lock screen app if its a third party app, changing the screen timeout settings--these things are simple troubleshooting steps you can take but mat or may not help.

Again, i would recommend a factory reset. trying to diagnose some random gremlin like you write about over the internet is going to be a challenge.

Hi Marctronixx,

Thanks for your post. I apologies for not being clearer in my post. When I wrote 'reset' I meant factory data reset. After trying the basic troubleshooting and not getting anywhere, that was my 'This has to fix it' solution, but still no joy.

I hate kidkat
This 4.4.2 update sucks

Why you ask

They removed text reflow
See here
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=62378

If I would have known this I would have never downgraded my phone.
I hate this.

Please someone tell me how to get my max Verizon back to the perfect version before I call Verizon and flip out on them.

Do not upgrade , you are really downgrading big time.

You have been warned.

I am calling Verizon
This is not acceptable at all
Text flow works fine on emails

Google put the screws to us big time

I see absolutely NO speed increase at all and See NOTHING NEW DO NOT DOWNGRADE YOUR PHONE!!!!

All I see now is my phone being LOCKED Down more. I could have went back to apple for that.

well its quite possible this is a "feature" of Kit Kat.

Let's stay tuned as others get the update and post up... :)

My screen times out same as before the update. Weird that yours is doing that.

Do you have ANY lock screen apps, time out apps, theme apps of any kind? If you factory reset does it still do that without any apps on it yet?

Hi NightAngel79,

Thanks for your reply. It still is not resolved even after a factory data reset. This has been done 3 times now. Issue is present as soon as the phone starts again, before any other applications are installed. Cheers.

Wow, that stinks.

At some point VZW has to replace the phone don't ya think? That so negatively effects battery you'd think they'd be more sympathetic....

Just over a week with my Verizon One Max on 4.4.2. At first was experiencing slightly increased battery drain. I copied all my files off my SD Card and internal storage. Did a reset of my phone and reformatted my sd card. Battery life is now the same as before the upgrade if not slightly better. My One Max is AWESOME!!!

Is anyone else having trouble deleting files off the sd card since the update as I am really struggling to delete mp4 files as it says to make sure my sd card isn't mounted as read only and that due to security features in kit Kat it may not be possible to delete certain files anymore.

Yup that is another feature Google stole from us

I hate kitkat! I want my phone back the way it was!

But from what I read HTC could have reversed that !
I am starting to blame them also.

yes its a "Feature" of kit kat. its for security reasons and I understand their direction and why they set it up that way.

rooting is your choice if you desire to go back to a previous OS version.

Hi,
I still love this phone but am just upset that they take stuff away without telling you, it is just the way they do it.

My phone is starting to settle in and gets better day by day, I know at some point I need to do a factory reset but I figured I will save that for Sence 6.0 update that verizon will drag out till probable the end of the year.

Thank you for being soo kind on here, I love how you call ifruit, made me laugh.

If you don't mind, could you please tell me what you think about the way google is going, by locking the sd card, cause I just don't get it?

Thank You

Just finished a factory reset, pain in the backside but was having GPS issues so ad to give it a try.
Now they have removed the option to delete sd card files how do I actually go about deleting files that I no longer want. I have been trying to delete some mp4 files that I have finished with but so far the only app I have found that can access the sd card is es file explorer. This program does give me the option of deleting but when I check in mx player it is still there.

After factory reset...
Did you notice any difference in performance or anything else?
Did it fix your GPS problem?

I don't have any problem so far, just all the features google removed without notice.

Did you try the hTC app, I did use it before the update and it actually works great then but I have not tried with this update (downgrade)?

Not noticed any performance differences but that may well be because it performed well anyway and not had a chance to try the GPS yet so no idea if it is any better or not. I really really hate this not being able to delete from the sd card though so I hope HTC come up with a fix for it as I have several files that I can't even delete by connecting via usb to the pc.

Workaround for managing files on SD Card is to connect phone to computer via USB and using Windows Explorer to manage files. It is a pain but it works for me till Android fixes the issue. Hopefully it will be one of the fixes in 4.4.3.

I've always done this even before kit Kat. Put it in disk drive mode and you can transfer files much faster.

Not a pain for me. Plug the phone to a computer via USB. Takes a few seconds. :-)
