Root 4ext

Now that I got rooted I have downloaded 4ext but not quite sure how it is used. I am used to cwm in the triumph so the recovery while I was rooting look very familiar but everyone says 4ext is the way to go. So, tips etc on how to use it as well as what can and can't we do with it? I did search here but couldn't come up with any sort of guide.

I learned about it by just looking through it. It's not hard to see how it operates once you explore it. All I know is it's way easier and faster than CWM.

In the rooting guide, you need to use adb to access the recovery. Does 4EXT allow you to access recovery features without adb?

edit: sorry I didn't realize I don't need adb to access the recovery used in the guide, maybe just the first time you install it you do, but now that I'm rooted I can use POWER+VOL DOWN. So I'm guessing 4EXT works the same way. I think I'll try it.

From the app, you can select to go to the recovery or even choose tasks like wiping both caches and it will reboot into recovery and start the process.

4EXT does not require fastboot (I assumed you meant fastboot rather than ADB) to flash kernels properly. Unfortunately, 4EXT will only allow you to download the recovery via their app, which means you have to be rooted already, which is why my guide has you going through fastboot the first time.

The app is pretty self explainitory and will walk you through everything once you tap on the Recovery option.

Hey wigginst, how did you root yours? i want to root mines, but only root so i could have access to superuser, im not planning on flashing a new rom, i want to keep the stock rom for now, will appreciate any help, and my bad if i went offtopic.

I followed the htcdevunlock thread approach. Never could get the newbie guide way to work. Was a root sort of day as I did my new tablet yesterday as well (it was much easier!). BTW I have stayed on stick. Only things I have really done with the root are some backups and making that virgin Mobile boot horror go away.

Main reason I rooted was to remove the virgin boot and sound and while I was at it got rid of 2 bloatware apps I would never use.
