4G drops to 3G while screen off for a while?

Something I noticed recently is it seems if my phone's screen has been off for a while and I don't have anything actively using the connection, when I turn it on it'll show 3G and then flip to 4G shortly after that.

Pretty cool idea, I actually like that it does that. It means simple bg data stuff happens over 3G (and thus uses less power). I'll have to test it with something like andftp and see if an active xfer over 4G makes it keep 4G on.

Anyone else notice this? Not sure how long the screen has to be off, I just notice after it flips back to 4G (which it does quickly) if I turn the screen off and on again it's still on 4G. Seems to be related to how long the phone is sleeping.

I noticed it too when I wake up my Nexus after more than like 20 minutes idle. It shows 3G first on signal bar and then quickly switches to 4G. That's with nothing other than pulling push emails.

Cool, good to know. I wasn't sure if it was a feature or a "bug" (I use quotes because I actually like it lol).

Sorry to bump an old thread, but my old thunderbolt did this too. I've been trying to figure out how to do it on my galaxy nexus, but haven't figured out how to. Does it have to do with stock vs root? My thunderbolt was not rooted, but my nexus is. Its running AOKP milestone 5.
