Help 4g Service Issues

Lurker
I'm wondering if any other users have seen this with their Evo V 4g.
Edit: Phone is running on completely stock.

I got the phone over the summer, and the 4g worked right away. I live in a city with really great sprint 4g coverage. One day I noticed that it wouldn't connect to any 4g towers. The 4g antenna would be on, wifi would be off, and it would frequently come up with the "4g Antenna is on! Tap to scan for 4g Service" notification. When I tap that, the 4g settings page opens and the "Tap to Scan for 4g Service" title is greyed out, meaning it is already scanning. It would never actually connect.

This is a problem, as not only am I without 4g service, but the phone constantly turning the antenna on and off and trying to find service seems to eat the battery very quickly.

This lasted for about a month. Virgin Mobile support wasn't able to help me. I've tried updating the PRL and profile, doing a reset from the ##clear# screen. Finally I got frustrated and did a full factory reset. That resolved the issue right away.

1.5 months have past since then, and it has recently started doing it again. I don't really feel like doing another factory reset.

I will bet either the tower has an issue or they switched it over to LTE, they have done this to a few towers, apparently.

That means we're going to be obsolete :-(

Not really, Clear both maintains their own towers and also has their equipment co-located on Sprint's towers. Wimax's footprint won't be getting any bigger but they also continue to run their 4G isp and Sprints current contract runs through 2015. Also one of the main reasons for Softbanks interest in Sprint is because of their holding a majority interest in Clear which includes a pretty sizable block of spectrum. I wouldn't worry about Clear and their WiMax network disappearing any time soon.

I've had similar problem but not the same as OP. Since the ota update, I seem to lose 4G connection more often. There are times where I need to reboot the phone in order to get 4G back. 4G speed also seems to be 2-4mbps slower (from 12mbps to 8). VM support consider it a non-issue since a reboot "fix" the error. The whole last week, I didn't have issue. I've had 2 disconnects the past 3 days. At least the calls and texts are coming through. So I can live with this.

I am on stock, rooted and s-off (basically, just applied the SU patch).

Sprint now owns most of Clear and both are being bought by a Japanese company.

Sprint and Clear have taken down some Wimax antennas, but the majority will remain for a while yet (2015 or 2016). By which time LTE will have exceeded Wimax coverage and will be offered to us.

Why would they take down some WiMAX antennas if they are still widely used on Sprint?

First, they are no longer widely used by Sprint, that's why it's being offered to Virgin and Boost, second, some of the sites that were removed were stake sites. When the spectrum was sold the FCC required that you provide coverage in x markets in x amount of time. Most that are being removed are small areas that were never built out. They were basically placeholders.

LTE is less used that Wimax even by Sprint users, but yeah, the sites being taken down are smaller areas that were never fully built out and are pretty much non-profitable.

Just an update, I factory reset my phone again and 4g is working like a charm, just like last time. It isn't the towers, for sure. Let's see how long it lasts.

I use a program to automatically back up sms and mms messages to my gmail, and I used a new program to back up my apps, but apparently it pretty much just saves the apk's which made reinstalling them easy, but I still lost my settings there.

The stock messaging app has backup built in, just click on the menu. I personally use Titanium for backups but I know many people have had good luck with My backup. Unfortunately I don't think that there's any way to back up your data without root.

just thought I'd update this thread and say that the issue has once again occured, it has been about 4 days since I have connected to 4g. It tries to connect, and the 4g antenna turns on and off constantly, draining the battery again. =/

I usually get perfect 3G (don't have 4G by me) in my house and the past 2 weeks or so I've noticed I'm only getting 1-2 bars of 1X. I don't want to do a Factory Reset, 1 because I'm not good with things like that, and 2 because I don't want to lose anything (apps, pics, texts). So I guess I have to deal with it.

You won't lose pics on your sd card and you can backup texts easily to your sd card as well in stock text settings
