this has been an on going issue with android and apple users. is he using imessage or your standard sms/mms? imessage is for apple users only which is why you are not getting or receiving his text messages.

iMessage should revert to SMS/MMS when sending to someone who isn't an iMessage user. The problem is usually when someone switches to Android without signing out of iMessage first, because then iPhones will still think they should send iMessages to them.

Them not receiving is even odder. Do you use the same network? I wouldn't ask that in Europe where our systems are more uniform, but I've heard of the mix of different cellular technologies in the States sometimes causing problems with messaging, so it's a factor to consider (plus if you use the same carrier it's easier to ask them to investigate).

I am inclined to think it's at the iPhone end just because it's easier for iOS users to be using something other than standard SMS/MMS without realising, but just to be sure maybe try sending a message from a third party SMS app that doesn't support RCS ("chat" as Google call it), or turn that feature off in your Messages app and then try. I don't think your phone should send RCS messages by mistake to someone who isn't signed-up to that service, but as that would be similar to the iMessage problem it seems only fair to consider the possibility.

Ask your friend to check if support for SMS/MMS is actually enabled in their iMessage app.

Does your frend have similar problems exchanging text messages with other Android users or just you? And conversely, do you encounter similar problems with any other iPhone/iMessage users?
