Root 5.7.893

so I recently went through the incredibly annoying hassle of going from 5.5.886 to 5.5.893, and now I see that there was apparently an update leaked. Do I have to go through the hassle of reverting back to stock 886 in order to update to 5.7.893? Or is there a file I can just flash to bring me from 5.5.893 to 5.7.893?

Webtop is broken on the single files. Apparently you can't use the full update even thought you revert to 5.5.886. I tried myself. I had to do all the single files and then revert and then do the full update. The full update is what you want.

man I miss my incredible. I don't want to have to go through the hassle of basically SBFing my phone everytime I want to flash a leaked update. is it even worth it? I didn't notice any difference from 5.5.886 to 5.5.893, why should I go to 5.7.893? will my phone be able to download at something faster than .2 Mbps? Cuz that would be nice.

This is not for every time, it's only for this time b/c 1) these are leaked PARTIAL updates, and the sources are Moto's Dev and QA servers - meaning they are always working on updates her and there and we're getting partials, which will break things - its the joys of Beta testing, and 2) The 5.7.893 is a full true update so you should not have to revert again until the final update is actually released OTA - and then, only if you want to be on the official update versus a leaked one. And even then, you may not need to revert.

Theory is using 5.7.893 as a base. You don't need to be on 5.7 to use it but thats what his roms are running off of.

it will revert the system files, but the radio and kernel will not revert, per the locked bootloader

So, for my understanding, will your phone have the proper functionality or not? I'm currently running 5.7 (obviously) with the stock ROM. I would like to return to the Eclipse ROM, but I'm not sure if it's based on 5.5 or 5.7. Does it matter?

It should not.

In the XDA thread I'm following more than one user has already done this without ill effects, but I cannot guarantee which ROM(s) they tried.

i am still on Theory Rom 2.1 on 5.7.983 with no ill effects. I am sure you should be able to run rom based off older OTAs. Whether or not it takes advantage of whatever updates were done is another thing. I am patiently waiting for 2.2 to get released again so I can try it out ^^

It has no choice to make use of both radio and kernel - as those are the only versions of both that are installed.

If it doesn't make use of the kernel, it doesn't boot.

If it doesn't make use of the radio, then you have no connectivity.

IOW, it has to take advantage of those b/c they are there, but whether it can take full advantage of them remains to be seen.

If ROM users slowly start complaining that their connectivity issues have not gone away, while those of us not ROMmed have no connectivity issues, then the 5.7.893 system patches are also needed to alleviate the issue, meaning it is not just a radio problem....

Very well said!

here's definitely a great reason to update to 5.7.893 - in addition to the radio and kernel fixes, my battery time has improved decently.

On light use I've gotten ~28 hours on the extended battery before the update. Now, on the update, you're gonna be amazed:

Yup, over 2 more hours, and this was with decent use - I read manga last night for an hour, I surfed this morning for over an hour over 3G, and I have a weather widget that updates hourly, as well as having used Maps, and other stuff.

I cannot really perform any statistical analysis as I never actually logged exactly what I was doing, so it may not be statically significant, but still - over 30 hours on a single charge. :p

Exactly what I meant but you worded it better than I did lol. I am using Theory 2.1 ATM which I don't think is based off 5.7.983 while 2.2 is. As far as battery life I see a marginal increase but not enough to say for sure as my signal at work sucks so my battery life is around 12 hours. As far as signal I get 3G in my work area where I normally don't but that could just be me. I don't live in a 4g area so I can't comment on that either. I will be using 2.2 as soon as I can get it.

Currently at 31H 27M and on the 5% warning.

I think this is the best I've ever gotten from an extended battery.

I am using the regular battery and non rooted.. and i am also seeing at least 2 hours more out of my battery. And almost no signal drop... Lets hope ICS dont mess with this battery life i am getting now when we get that update..

It may make it worse than this update, but I'm betting that it will still be better than 5.5.886 on our phones.

so, in conclusion, if I have 5.5.893 I will have to revert back to stock, 5.5.886 and then install 5.7.893? But after that I may not have to revert to stock anymore in order to update?

You wont be able to get to 100% stock as the Kernel and Radios are updated once you do the 5.5.893 update. Once you do one of the OTA updates you're gonna have to go thru the whole process of updating to 5.6.893 then 5.7.893 then revert to stock then doing the full 5.5.886 to 5.7.893 update. I tried going from 5.5.893 to 5.5.886 then the full udpate but it was a no go for me.

As far as the 5.7.893 update I am noticing more 3G drops. I rarely had them too before I upgraded the radios. At least once a day 3G disappears. One time in a good 3G area I had 3G completely disappear and reboots/airplane would not bring it back. Had to do a battery pull. So far for me signal drops are more frequent. Signal strength might be better but at the loss of complete signals at random times.

sounds like it's not worth it.

my issue is most of the time I have a full signal, and I get a download speed of .2 Mbps. Yes you read that right, it wasn't a typo. .2 Mbps. Right now I'm FLYIN at .57 Mbps. I miss my Droid Incredible. No 3G drops, and consistent 1.5-2.5 Mbps download speeds. And strangely, I don't hear anybody else complaining about this. All I ever hear about is peoples 3G/4G dropping out completely. Never hear anyone talk about slow-ass download speed.

These are very experimental IMO. It's a pain to erase the whole phone when you flash backward. TiBackup isn't all it's cracked up to be but it helps.

Well, I think it's been posted elsewhere , but the MR1 (aka 5.6.893) is what was breaking Webtop. if I can confirm it I'll update the instructions so that you can avoid having to revert to stock (and lose all apps, customizations, etc. until restoring from TiBu...)
