Help 5.9.901 Data Drops

I am running 5.5.893 and have no direct exposure to 5.9.901 (that is apparently incorporated in 5.9.902 that is about to go to the testers).

I have read a lot of good reports about the improvements in the data drop problem from a lot of 5.9.901 users. I don't think the following has ever been asked ...

-- Has anyone using 5.9.901 had any data drops or did 5.9.901 finally correct all the remaining problems?

-- If you are on 5.9.901 and did have data drops ... how many and how often?

I went to 901, and I can definitely say that everything is better. I didn't get many drops on 893, but it's extremely solid. I've only had one drop in the past week or so that I've been on it, and that may have been because I was in a place with very little signal.

I'd go for it myself. I was kind of anxious at first, but everything turned out alright and I went to Eclipse v2.1.

901 is so sexy while I can't say I've never had a drop I can say that it's so extremely rare and more importantly it fixes itself without any work on my part.

I get "no update necessary" when checking for updates, so how does one "go for it"? And what is Eclipse v2.1?

The latest released version is 5.5.893.

5.9.901 was pushed to some early test people but never released.

5.9.902 is supposed to be gong into test today. If successful it will probably be released and pushed to everyone.

If you are at 5.5.893 then the response you are getting is correct.

.901 has been very stable for me on Stock and I've noticed a big improvement in keeping a 3G/4G data connection. The only problems I've been having (and I had them on .893 also) is a lag when switching from WiFi to 3G/4G on occasion, but I've heard that complaint noted on other forums about the Bionic in general so I'm not too concerned.

In short, I'd say keep a nandroid backup of your system on .893 to go back for getting an official OTA update, but go ahead and use .901 until that comes out.

I don't normally get data drops but I have noticed that my 5.9.901 has a stronger data connection, and is much faster than normal when using speed tests...

+1

I didn't have may data drops but .901 is much faster. It also seems (for me) that switching between WiFi and 3g/4g is smoother.

i just installed 901 last night and i can honestly say my data connection has been phenomenal since doing it. My father's 893 bionic can literally sit next to mine and be on 3G while mine is chuggin along on 4G.

I can't wait for 902

What is "901" and where can one get it?.
:)

5.9.901 was a next version of the system after 5.5.886 and was sent to a few users. There have been very good reports on the solution of data drops from that version. The leaked version is available for people who want to experiment. It of course is totally unsupported and may require work to revert back to the stock system when the next release is finally released to everyone.

5.9.902 is reported(from one source) to be about to go to testers prior to release to everyone. It is a slight upgrade to 5.9.901. If all goes well it would probably be pushed to you in 10-14 days. (The last upgrade was 5.5.893 and was in the testers hands for one week.)

So ... if your back is to the wall and you must have more reliable data connection today ... try 5.9.901. If you can hold on for a little while longer ... wait for 5.9.902.

In short, I'd say keep a nandroid backup of your system on .893 to go back for getting an official OTA update, but go ahead and use .901 until that comes out.

Be careful ... the Bionic has an encrypted bootloader, so unlike the OG Droid you can't just flash a nandroid backup and completely restore an earlier version. In this case, your system files would be restored to .893 but your kernel would still be on .901, which would result in a failure (and possibly a bootloop/softbrick) when attempting to install the .902 update or higher. This is what got so many people into trouble with installing the leaked cheesecake releases.

Having said that, there is a way to revert back to stock now, but it's more complicated than just restoring a nandroid backup and will result in losing your data and settings. Just be careful and remember that the encrypted bootloader complicates things in ways that are not immediately obvious. ;)
