Help 64gb micro SD card in S2

GiggityGiggity

Hey all. I just bought a Sandisk 64gb micro sd for my S2. It works fine after formatting it in the phone but there's something odd. The phone formatted as fat 32 and shows 59.4gb free. When I plug the phone into my laptop using mass storage mode it shows 63.8gb free. Why is the phone showing 4.4gb less?

I'm not sure of the reason.
What are your figures for the internal storage? Do they differ?

My 16Gb card and the internal storage reports exactly the same figures in both Windows7 and on the phone itself.

My guess is that the laptop defines 1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes, and Android defines 1GB = 2^30 (1,073,741,824) bytes, or one GiB. The numbers you cite work with these figures.

Exactly. Chalk it up to the goofy way each OS defines a GB.

In reality ...

a kilobyte = 1024 bytes (not 1,000 bytes)
a megabyte = 1024 kb or 1,048,576 bytes
a gigabyte = 1024 MB or 1,073,741,824 bytes
a terabyte = 1024 GB or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes

As you can see, the larger the amount, the less accurate common rounding becomes.

But this doesn't explain why both internal storage and external card on mine get reported exactly the same in both Windows7 and on the phone itself?

The didn't specify which OS they had on their laptop. I do believe Windows 7 changed the way in which it reports storage space.

I also get very similar results.

I didn't know OSs treated memory differently. Someone should create a blog post about different operating systems and how they measure memory sizes. Anyone?

Yeah, forgot to say it was a MacBook Pro that reported the card as 63.8gb.

Edit:
Just checked on Windows XP and it does indeed show as 59.4gb. Apple obviously calculates it differently (trust Apple).

Hi there,

You still haven't encountered any issues in using 64Gb micro-SD card?
sluggishness, skipping media, or synching problems?

I am contemplating replacing a Samsung 32Gb by a 64Gb card.

Many thx for your feedback,

Peter.

Nope, haven't had any issues whatsoever. All media plays fine, no problems with syncing and no speed issues. The only issue was the cost of the card. ;)
