6P worth the non-contact price? Wife says Heck No!

Hey guys--

My last phone was the S4, but that fried out over 2 months ago. I've been waiting for the perfect phone and thought the 6p was the best option out there. Today I finally pulled the trigger on the pre-order, told the wife and she freaked out.. "$600 for a phone? I'm going on a shopping spree" I tried to explain the benefits and how awesome the phone is, but she was not having it.

I'm currently on a VZW family plan and don't really plan on switching anytime soon. I'm eligible for upgrade and can get the"contract price" on any phone VZW offers.

So I must ask is it really worth the $618 with protection plan or given my circumstances would one of the VZW phones be better option? If so, whats the best phone available?

If you look at all the things today's phone can do, I would say its worth it. Its a nice screen for the decent GPS function of Google Maps. Mount if to the dash and good to go. Otherwise buy a separate GPS for some $150 - $200 ? I would use that to help towards your validation. Also big enough screen to where you don't have to buy a separate tablet. Its already paid for itself lol

Poor you! how much do you pay for Verizon service?

My total bill is like $250 a month. That's with (2) unlimited calls/texts and 2GB of data, (1) unlimited calls and text with 6GB of data and two non-smart phones. I think I pay about $62 for my part of the bill.

Wow thats a bit much. I pay $125 after tax on tmobile for 3 phones. All have unlimited texts/calls. (2) 1GB Data and (1) 3GB data (mine of course). But tmobile doesn't upcharge or stop data, you just get throttled after your limit, which is still not bad. Maybe switching would help your case. Also tmobile has Band 12 (700mhz) frequency which the N6P will eventually support (hopefully by release). This frequency gives great reception inside buildings while penetrating walls.

Additionally, from what I've read, protection plan is not absolutely needed. But it depends on how rough you are with your phone; I'm assuming a $600 expense will be taken care of well. I actually didn't get the protection plan because many said google still takes care of you if you buy from their store. Also with the protection plan, its a $75 deductible per use and you can have max 2 claims. So factoring all that in, I'm like I'll take the risk.

Yeah, I don't think Tmobile currently has the reception like VZW in my area.

You should find out. You're throwing away $100-$150/month. That adds up fast. All three Nexus 6P phones could be paid for in 12-18 months with the money you'd save.

Find a friend with T-Mobile to test out the reception. For me, I rarely leave my metro area so I don't really care. I'm even on the very edge of the suburbs and I get LTE with TMo. And when I do leave, I still get voice fine. If i'm far enough away to not get voice, I'd rather not have my phone anyways;)

Is the 6P worth $600? Yes, we just aren't used to paying the actual price of a device in the US because the contract system with the carriers lasted for so long. Now that its starting to go away, people are getting a bit of sticker shock realizing their $200 on contract phone is actually $500-600+.

I've always sold my previous device(s) to try to recoup some of the costs of the off contract pricing.

I think it's worth it based on the specs of the phone vs. the cost of other phones with similar specs.

I'm also looking for a new phone and trying to (again) get away from Verizon. I received an invite for Project Fi so i'm going to get the 6P + the new cellular provider. In looking at savings with the double move, the new phone/provider will pay for itself within 5-6 months. Maybe you can check out Project Fi as well, esp since it looks like you don't use too much data in your family. Good luck.

Is there a "best" way to wipe a phone for resale? I'm always worried that I won't get everything off of the phone.

For some people it won't be the case, but if your current phone was still in good shape selling it on craigslist, eBay etc is a good way to knock down the cost. If I were to sell my note 4 I could easily get 250-300 for it to put towards the nexus.

It will be interesting to see if used phone prices in the US start to increase with the end of carrier subsidies.

Ouch...I pay $186 with all the tax and fees on ATT..two lines sharing 30 gb of data, unlimited text, calls and the price includes the Next program pricing for a Iphone 6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

And yes...the 6P is definitely worth it..i pre ordered mine the first day and its killing me waiting for it..the phone from the spec sheet is top notch and well worth it..Im sure your wife will change her mind once she sees it in hand. Oh and I dont think the extended warranty is needed..but thats just me

I'm amazed at the reviews for this phone, particularly the ones that claim it is "the best Android Phone". Not used to seeing those types of things about the Nexus.

The OP has 4 phones on his account at the listed price. Those of you who have these killer deals through TMO and ATT, I sure would like to know where you get them and how long you've been with them because I've done the math on multiple occasions and every time I end up wondering how everybody thinks it's such a great deal.

Are they older, grandfathered type deals everyone's talking about? Many of us Verizon users have (nearly or exactly) an 18% employee discount. I did the math for switching to TMO and ATT and came in just a little under for TMO (though less allowable data) and more for ATT. Where is this magic pixie dust you all have lol? I want some.

I currently pay just over $200 for an S6 on unlimited, an iphone 6 with 4GB and an iphone 6s with 2GB. So including the cost of 3 like devices, can somebody point out the savings I could get by switching? The online calculators and/or conversations I've had may be leading me astray.

I'm not doubting what those state they pay for total bill, but,I'm w/you.
When including device costs,it's a virtual wash on which carrier to pick, exception being those who use 29 gazillion GB's data every month.

In your case, the savings aren't that huge since you "only" have three lines. Once you get two lines, each additional line after that is only $10+addl data on TMO. I'm not sure what ATT does, but Cricket is similar. Since the OP has five lines, lines 3-5 are cheap. Since you use a lot of data, when including the cost of phones, it looks like your plan isn't that bad. For others of us, it doesn't make sense to do a contract. My wife and I are on year 2 out of hopefully 3+ years with our Nexus 5's. Therefore, I add $10/mo/line ($350/12/3=~$10) to compare costs of contracts vs. TMO prepaid. My mother-in-law is also on our plan, so that's three lines. The prices don't even compare. We pay $100/month with no additional data. Including phone costs it's still just $120/month. Verizon wasn't close to that.

I have my whole family (5 people total) on a T-Mobile pre-paid plan. Each line is $30/month (a little over $32 after taxes) for unlimited data (first 5GB at LTE, 3G after that), unlimited text, and 100 minutes of talk. Since we all use Google Voice through Hangouts, the text and talk time mean nothing to us as text and talk end up going through data. That $150/month ($160/month after taxes) is about $200 cheaper than any family plan that supports 5 people -- none of those family plans come close to offering the amount of data per person as the T-Mobile pre-paid plan.

So, off the plans alone, I'm saving at least $2400/year.

Now, let's assume each member of my family gets the latest and greatest device at $600 each (which we don't). That's $3000 for devices. On those family contract plans, the devices are still at least $200 each with some being $300 each. But, for this example, I'll use the $200 level. That's $1000 for 5 devices.

So in year one, I'll save $2400 on the plan, but I lose $2000 on the devices. My year 1 savings only ends up being $400. However, in year 2 (we all keep our devices for at least 2 years unless it's lost, stolen, or broken) we save $2400 on the plan. So, over two years, we end up saving at least $2800 over the traditional post-paid contract route.

Actually, T-Mobile has a family plan for 4 for $120 with 10GB per line. My recollection is that a fifth line can be added for another $30 -- so roughly the same you are paying now but with double the data and unlimited talk. As long as you have multiple lines on your account, it is much easier to get great deals that beat the better prepaid plans.

My friend, the smart thing to do would be to get a droid turbo through verizon right now, if you trade in any smart phone its free with a new 2 year. Then sell that thing immediately on Swappa for like 500 and use the cash for the 6p. So in the end, youre pretty much getting a 6p for free because of the old cell trade in for new Droid turbo 2.

Yes, I've seen that promotion. However, that's not one of their standard family plans. It's a limited time promotion and after the contract expires, you no longer receive that price and have to switch to one of their other family plans.

Wife freaking out?

Do what I do. Get one of those inflatable dolls. They don't talk during the game and they don't call the cops if you ever have to smack them around.

It is a matter of out-of-pocket at point of sell. If you tell someone $600 right now or $"X" per month they are going to take second option.

$600 for a 2 year investment is nothing when you think about it being 10 gadgets in one.

Have her look at Project Fi as well, as opposed to your massive VZW bill. That could be a good selling point

I think this phone could last for years. It may be a while before i get a new one unless one comes out with a retractable back scratcher.
