720p Display, Overkill!

I am using my Macbook Pro 13" with 1280x800 pixels, how will it fair against the Galaxy Nexus screen?

In another word, how would the laptop screen look like after me getting used to the Galaxy Nexus screen (assuming I was using the Galaxy Nexus a lot),

I believe qHD is maximum for now for me.

The 720p feels like an overkill for me, what do you people think?
 
I dont agree with your comparison. The GNex screen is good, but it is not gonna spoil you for all other screens. Especially not 13" screens. The phone is great. I still need my laptop, use it all the time and like it a lot too. I use the GNex at the same time and go back and forth with no issues.

This is not a reason to avoid the GNex. There may be reasons, but this ain't it.

Could remember that laptop screen isn't spoiling me for my over 10 years old TV either,

The G Nexus (Those sexy software buttons) and Sensation are the only android phones I am considering in today's market, I'll wait for MWC in late feb for HTC announcements then I'll decide, hopefully the HTC ville will have software buttons just like G Nexus.

Your logic completely baffles me.

Has seeing a plasma tv ruined LCD ones? Or a good CRT monitor...has that ruined LCD monitors?

IMO this is absurd. As was said, there are valid reasons to not get this phone. Worrying that the screen is too high quality (in terms of published resolution...not arguing SAMOLED vs SAMOLED+ vs LCD here) for you is not one of them.

It has nothing to do with Windows, but screen res. Apple charges a premium for that laptop ($2000-2500). For that money I can build a sweet desktop with a 27" ips led monitor that will bury it.

As for 720p being overkill? No way. Videos and pics are even clearer, clearer than any other android phone I've seen. Plus browsing is noticeably more comfortable.
 
The screen resolution of the galaxy nexus is fantastic, it does not make any sense to hold back progress on the clarity of the screen.

I understand that bigger is not necessarily better, but surely it is better to have the clearest image on the screen.

HD videos look awesome on the screen

I still think it's too early for 720p, qHD resolution was short-lived compared to the previous and possibly future screen resolutions!

Wait, so the point of this thread is discussing our opinion on whether or not it's a "good thing" that the Nexus has the best cellphone display on the market right now??

For starters, the display on the GN is 4.65 inches...that's quite a bit smaller than 13 inches, so all things considered, you're still going to want to look at content on your Macbook.

The display on your GN will look "better", thanks to its 316 ppi, but if this is your issue, you're going to have a problem with anything which is bigger, since they don't make larger displays which can match that ppi (your Macbook looks to be about 113 or so).

Unless you're going to vastly increase the diagonal display size, you're not going to see anything close to 113 ppi from something the size of a cell phone in today's market.

Combine this with the fact that there is more to a good display than it's resolution, and you'll find a host of reasons to use something other than your cell phone for viewing purposes. Nonetheless, if this is your opinion, there are certainly other options out there.:)

That's what I've been trying to explain (but failed) in this thread, as I don't want my MBP display to look washed up for my eyes after getting used to the 720p of the G nexus.

Even with my MBP low resolution display, thanks to its amazing display type it's amazing still, can't imagine higher resolution on 13" since I'd barely be able to read texts since they'll become smaller with more resolution and zooming it would be a must.

If they stuck a bit with qHD and added those super AMOLED or even better screen technologies and leave 720p for later next year or couple of years, that would be better in my book, but that's my opinion.

For starters, in a 4.65" display, 720p is no more of an overkill that, say, 640p in a 3'5" display (iPhone 4S). As for your Macbook, it's all about how close you're to the screen: the closer you are, the higher the resolution you need to avoid pixelation. So unless you're using your macbook from 10 inches away, that 800p display will still be fine.

qHD sucks in a display that big. Ask Droid RAZR users.

I guess you're right then in terms of the distance between my eyes and the screen,

Then, I shall wait for MWC 2012 and see what HTC have in their minds for a mid-range, otherwise White Galaxy Nexus here I come!

My HTC Legend is getting grumpy...
 
Keep in mind, whatever gets announced in MWC is unlikely to be on shelves until somewhere between april and august, so you'll be doing a fair bit of waiting, specially if you're planning to buy subsidized :p

Anyway, if you do end up with a white Nexus, i'm sure you will enjoy its 720p overkill display (hey, "overkill display" actually sounds like a cool marketing branding, doesn't it?).

Either way I am waiting for the RRP (Recommended retail price) drop on the Galaxy Nexus which usually happens 4 month after the device is released, in the meantime I should be looking into what HTC is having in mind for MWC, if I liked he Ville I'll be waiting for it and will manage on my HTC Legend.

I bet i'll like that overkiller 720p, you don't need to tell me that. :cool:
 
Figured that even my HTC Legend with 320x480 pixels 3.2" display has even more PPI than my 1280x800 pixels MBP,

Possibly because of pixelation since the user stays away from the laptop/computer screen compared to the mobile phone distance?
 
Phones are used totally differently from laptops. I don't sit one foot away from my laptop, and likewise I don't hold my phone 2 feet away from me. But now I have a hard time using my Incredible, mostly because of the screen size difference.

Also gotta disagree on MBPs making Windows look primitive. A good screen with Windows will look just as good as any MBP I have ever seen. My ASUS has a 1920x1080 17" screen and it looks great. My friend's Sony actually as a 15" screen with the same resolution and it looks great, but I might consider that overkill. Most desktop operation systems aren't designed for a pixel density that high.

I didn't say that the same resolution display on a windows computer is worse than MBP, what I meant is the OS itself of Macintosh UI and usability is much better than windows with almost no viruses hitting it, as I am having a windows 7 64-bits desktop at the moment for gaming purposes.

What? Who actually uses "viruses" as a drawback for Windows nowadays? It's not the 90s. I haven't had an anti-virus program installed on my Windows box in at least 7 years and haven't had a single virus (yes I check maybe once or twice a year). It's damn near impossible to get a virus either, unless you're visiting weird sites or falling for blatantly obvious facebook virii. Even when you download a torrent it's hard to get a virus as most of them will have comments that will alert you if there's a virus.
