Root A completely confused Newb

Drivembig

Newbie
I am more confused now than ever. The more I read, the more stupid I get (or feel at least). I have followed guide after guide and read post after post on this site, but it seems that I read something different every time I come here, or maybe the same thing just written different.

I have a Rezound. I have it unlocked via htcdev. I have Amron installed and a nandroid backup made. I have superuser installed. I purchased Titianum Backup Pro and I have frozen some of the bloat.

The question is, Where do I stand?

I keep reading about a oneclickroot and know that I never did anything like that. I guess now I don't even know if I am actually rooted or not. I can't seem to find the guide that I followed before. Titianium Backup works well, so I assumed that I was rooted.

If anyone could shed some light on where I should go next. What I want to accomplish is to install a clean rom. Which I still don't really understand because I see some with a PH file and others say you don't need to use the hboot PH file. I'm just confused now.

Thanks in advance for any help.

As long as you have su installed and TiBU is working properly with root permission you are rooted. Things have changed a lot on this phone after the unlocking of the bootloader and again after the OTA so some stuff you read is probably outdated.

At this point, post unlocking and OTA, temp root and OneClick root do not work anymore. If you ever relock and need root again and find you don't have it, you can navigate to the developer menu of Amon Ra and install su and that will get you rooted again.

As to installing a ROM, there's GB and ICS ROMs. You have to install the appropriate kernel for each OS. The PHzip files that come with the ROMs are the kernels, so you can use those or you can flash a custom kernel as long as it is the same OS as your ROM (GB or ICS).

There has recently been a new development in kernel flashing where the kernel is packed into the ROM and so after the ROM is flashed it will automatically take you to hboot and asks if you want to update, you say yes and it will flash the PHzip that was created by a script in the ROM package. So these ROMS do not have a separate PHzip file.

Hope this helps.

The first thing you need to decide is "Sense" or "No-Sense" ... since you're buying an HTC device, and that's the land I prefer to live in myself, I'll assume "Sense".

I ran CleanRom ICS for about the last week. Was pretty happy with it, but I liked the look of RezROM. He just released his ICS 2.0 version, and I flashed it today. So Far, So Good.

Both use the "reboot to fastboot, install kernel" mode rather than coming in pieces and needing you to install manually.

CleanRom:
[ROM] 3/11 - CleanROM ICSE 3.7 ★| ICS 4.0.3 | Sense 3.6| More Tweaks! | True Art ! |★ - xda-developers

RezROM:
[ROM] RezROM ICS 4.0.3 v2.0 | Fixed | Tweaked | Themed | Modded | [3/10/12] - xda-developers

Both, I must say, are stunning!

+1 on CleanRom. It's very smooth and haven't run into any issues on the latest version. Looking it over, I think I might give RezROM a shot just because, but we'll see how she goes.

Another you can try and see if you like is BAMF ICS. It's a bit rough around the edges sometimes, but very customizable:

[ROM] BAMF Rezound ICS v1.0 Preview

I like their work, but I haven't been able to make it work as my daily driver yet. Still, it does look good and I'm rooting for it! (Pardon the pun) ;)
