Root A few questions about... well everything

First off I'd like to say thanks to all the amazing developers. This is gonna be a collective of everything for myself of where I'm at and what I need help with. I've had my prevail rooted for about a month now. I've gotten all the basics down. I initially began with ctmod final, and it ran pretty good. Tweaked it up a bit. At this moment I'm running cm7 with xruptors improvements along with the v6, make, and 3g turbocharger scripts.

Questions

1.When I first ran V6 in script manager, running ctmod final and it came to lock home in memory I clicked yes for that. Now when I run it in cm7 it doesn't even give me the option, just says home is android.process.acore. am I just screwed here or can I restart from scratch, reformat everything and start over?

2.prls, are they regional? I'd like to switch it, but I don't even know where to start here.

3.is there a concise explanation for overclocking cm7

in my experience with the custom ROMs here, v6 is going to do more harm than good. Most of the things that v6 is capable of doing have already been added to the base of the rom. And using v6 is essentially doubling the files. This will tend to lead to instability down the road.

2.prls, are they regional? I'd like to switch it, but I don't even know where to start here.

as far as prls being regional, I'm not exactly sure. I know that some work well for some people than other ones do. There are a few threads with a collection of prls just grab some and give then a try, see what works for you.

3.is there a concise explanation for overclocking cm7

cm7 can be overclocked just the same as any of the other ROMs. You just need an app that will do it (playstore) , and a kernel that supports overlclock (namely katokernel)

Ok. Well I've restored back to before I installed any scripts. Are there any tweaks you'd suggest using? I had some 3g turbocharger and a few others, ipv4, 22citbun and I think tweak zv4. I had it up and running well at one point, near 1000 kbps up on speedtest.net. just trying to figure out how I got there and what made it go back to near 200 kbps.:-(

And what app for oc? I've got katokernel 2.6.35.14 SAM-SPHM820 will voltage control work? What could I set it to?

And as far as pro, its gonna be a while. No consistent access to a PC, borrowed my buddies PC to root it.
 
In the long run, I have found that all of those tweaks either do nothing or eventually cause problems.

I just run cm7 as is, with the updated adeno drivers and katokernel.

And yea, that app will work fine. Set cpu, voltage control, an tu tu CPU master, etc. They all work fine.

As far as data speeds go its VERY subjective. The number of people using your tower at any given time, the time of day, a slight breeze (Lol) will all effect your data speeds. Location is very important. At home I can get almost 3mbps, at my brothers house, with full bars, I'm lucky to pull 100kbps. Each tower is different. Even that is subjective, there have been a couple times lately where my data speed has slowed to a creep (even late at night when there should be no tower load)

On top of that, now it seems people are being throttled. Which could be what you are experiencing... how far are you into your pay cycle?
 
Ok that's where I'm at now. Guess it's just the area. My pay cycles about a week in about a week in. I know about the removal method. Haven't received the message about it since the first month of it going into effect.

Is it at all possible to just go back to stock, reset everything without Odin?
 
Half ass rom is as close to stock as you can get without a PC. But if you just want to start fresh you can always just reflash the rom of your choice, it will remove any tweaks you may have added :)
 
Ok. Thanks. One last question for now. What do you think of cm9 alpha, how stable is it? Also, I've partitioned the SD card already, would I need to do this again when switching Roms?
 
Ok. I wanna repartition my SD card. Would it be in anyway possible to put any files on the internal memory and partition and move files back? I'm doubting it but I figured I'd ask lol. Got somethings I don't wanna lose

I would save them on a pc then transfer them back to the card.
 
Ok. I've started fresh again and running cm7 with katokernel and the updated adreno drivers. Everything's running good now. Except dropbox isn't letting me download my files. When I click the file it says to get an app that can download the files. The hell?

EDIT: ahh nevermind I got it. Had to long press and export it.

Lol. Glad ya got it figured out. Don't ya hate it when they make something simple, hard? That had me stumped for a minute too when I started using the app. I actually didn't start using DropBox on a regular basis up until a few months ago. I have no idea why I waited so long because it's a great app to have. It comes in handy, that's 4 sure. :D

Haha yeah. It saved a lot of headache. Im not sure but could I upload a cwm backup, it'll only go piece by piece , download it and put it back together, would that work? I'd like to know because I wanna check out ctmod and that ssm virtual memory deal, just see how well it runs. I also need to know how to set that up, with swap and everything. Would I need to make a new partition?

Drop Box should allow you to upload the entire backup as 1 zip file. That's the way I would do it.

As for setting the SSM, ask Lordvincent or Cwhatever. those guys have got it down pat. I'm using my Marquee right now and it's been quite awhile since I've set it up. I actually do it the old fashioned way too. lol I do mine via ADB. There is a much easier way that 1 of the guys i mentioned can tell you exactly how to do. They are great guys and I'm sure one of them would be glad to help you out. Just send them a PM.
 
Prl's are NOT regional, but they kind of are.

It's a list of towers you can connect to. Its nationwide, but they make changes between versions, so a different number MIGHT be better in one certain region. Usually they add, remove, or update towers to 3g etc.

As you see, its for all CDMA carriers. and is a lot to go through.

If you live in a spot with basically no coverage, you probably won't get better service. If you live somewhere with good sprint service, but you have mediocore service or data speeds, it would be more likely to help.

The original reason i signed up here was to get a better signal. spent months trying pretty much all of them and it got maybe 1 bar better some spots. good luck


and thanks wetbiker for inadvertently reminding me the Mediafire app came out.
 
Ooook.... just got a call and about 10-20 seconds into it my phone plays the bootanimation sound and I guess it did a hot boot, I could still hear them talking on the phone til it got booted to the home screen. So anyone had this happen before? It happened running cm7

What do you have your CPU set to? You may be overclocked too high. All processors aren't created equally. Some prevails just can't handle being maxed out. (Some can't handle one step above 800)

Hmm. I had set the standard (before I touched it)

Min 200
Max 800
I/O sip
Governer ondemand

It just happened that once and I called back and everything went smooth. Dunno what happened :confused:

I did try to Max it completely out with nothing but reboots lol

Here's a link to Lordvincent's TUT for setting up S2E. I made one too but it's back in the thread and I don't feel like digging through all the pages/posts to find it. lol His steps are the same as mine.

Sometimes it's hard to get it to take and be able to get the boxes from being greyed out. If it doesn't allow you to check the boxes then go back in CWM and reformat the sd card and then try it again. It took me several times before I got it working last time.

Right, so I've done that and formatted sd-ext... everything got completely reset and I have to go through the entire process of download s2e, letting the market update and all that. Now my home button doesn't wanna work.

Here's all I did.

1.got s2e from play store
2.went and checked ext4 box
3. Rebooted, using twrp, (hasn't had any issues from twrp as of yet, that couldn't be it is it? )
4. Formatted/wiped sd-ext
5. Rebooted
6. Had to redownload s2e, and no change
7. Repeat 1-5, didn't work
8. Tried mount sd-ext just sat at ANDROID screen for half an hour....
9. Rebooted into recovery and rebooted system and now home button won't respond:(
10. Came here to complain while downloading a fresh install of cm7:D

In this step off reboot your supposed to then reboot again. After I tried like 10 times I finally did the double reboot and it worked fine for all the boxes then we're not greyed out you were able to check them all. So you need to start all over one more time. You need to also re partition your card while doing all of those steps to every time that you start over.
