Help A Few Questions

Lurker
I have just bought a new Galaxy Note and I think it is really really good, but there's just a few things that I'm not sure how to do and what certain things mean etc:

1. I have only ever had a H symbol with 2 arrows in the notification bar. I thought that I would have a 3G symbol but this has never appeared. Question is, what is the H symbol and is my 3G working? I have just turned off fast dormancy, as I have read that it may drain batter, and now I have an E where the H usually is. What is the E for?

2. I'd like to improve the battery life and I have read on here of a few ways to do that. One of the ways is to make sure that apps don't update too regularly. Where do I actually go to check how often the apps update?

3. I have downloaded a few apps and some have saved to the SD card and some have saved to the phone. Why is this? How do I choose where apps save to?

4. I used to have an iPhone 4 and I was forever double tapping the menu button and closing down apps. As far as I am aware with an adroid phone you don't need to do this? Is that right?

I'm sorry for length of this post and the amount of questions that I have asked. I am normally really good with phones but the galaxy note is more like a computer and I would rather just ask the questions than figure it all out myself over time.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know about the H...here's "E".......
EDGE definition (Phone Scoop) for more info google "edge phone service"
Re: APPS updating...When u download an app from the app store there will be a box to allow u to put a check mark in it. The box will say something like "allow auto update". Just don't check that box. The apps already on your phone called 'bloatware' , I don't know about the auto update on them...
The "phone /SD card" choice issue....There "MAY" be a choice when u install the app.....otherwise, go to menu ( L/L side of phone)/settings/applications/manage applications/ click on that/ you will see the ones u have downloaded ( look at the top of your screen, ( you'll see "on SD card) click on that to see. click the app you're interested in. You will see check boxes. You can move the apps from phone to SD card from there.

Closing down apps...Go to your task manager. close from that window "OR" find "application monitor" in the widgets or app store. Use that.

hope I helped

I want to elaborate on my reply ( above) by adding a link to another thread. I do not know how to do that?? Simagic

Is H higher than 4g as well??

Actually, H and H+ are software accelerated forms of 3G. This is usually referred to as 3.5G but some marketing departments round this up to 4G to confuse the general public. Basically, when you are seeing H or H+ (both supported by this phone) you should be getting very high speed data (depending on signal strength and numbers of phones using data in your cell and so on).

With regards to battery life, take a look at the FAQs sticky post at the top of this forum. In there you will find links to all the tricks and tips you need. That said, I have not bothered since I run Skype all the time and would not benefit. So, I just charge twice a day ;)

As other people have mentioned, you can only move applications after installation. The disadvantage of moving an app onto the SD card is that you will not be able to use any widgets associated with that application. This is why I have not bothered to move anything. I have 70+ apps installed and still have 70% free space in the system partition. If you still want to move apps then you can find apps in the market that will help you move them more easily.

Lastly, I don't bother killing apps (unless I know they are burning processor time). Android has an excellent memory manager so just let it do its job. If you really want to kill an app just long press the home button.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your new toy!

Hope this helps...

Regards,
Eric Ritchie.
