Root A little confused on rooting/kernel/putting new ROM

So I just got an AWE, and I'd like to root. Is this the right way of doing things?

Then, up comes the ROM, I think? It seems like the best two ROMs at the moment is Cyanogen and AWEsome Rom?

Which of the two do people prefer overall?

both roms are based off stock, my rom [cyanogen] is stock kernel with no overclock but dual core, [awesome] rom is oc kernel but its a little unstable [has random reboots], oc kernel is currently being tested and perfected , kernel is included with the roms so it will overwrite the kernel you flashed, its provided for people who want root and oc with stock rom, hope this clarifies things a bit

Ah I see, so even though your cyanogen is stock kernel, the dual core is unlocked so we should still see a performance increase? And, since I'll be using one of these two ROMs that it's ok to skip the kernel installation altogether?

you may not see as much of an increase in performance as you would expect using the stock kernel with both cores unlocked but it is a bit faster than normal.
the overclocked kernel has a much better performance increase than the stock at the price of some battery life. to be expected, run something harder than its supposed to and it draws more power.

as for the roms, at this point Cyanogen (not ACTUAL cyanogenmod, its themed stock) is more stable because it uses the stock kernel.
my rom (AWEsome V1.1) is faster, but some people are reporting that it gets stuck in a bootloop because of the custom kernel. the only way to tell if this will affect you is to flash it. there is no risk, it will not break your device it just might not boot the rom. i recommend making a backup in CWM.
speaking of which, i have an easier method here for installing CWM.
i will be updating my rom soon with the stock kernel included instead of the OC kernel, with a flashable zip for the OC kernel if you wish to test it. gonna take a bit because i recently had to swap hard drives and need to get it set up again.

Yes ur right, the kernel is with the rom, all u need is cwm and flash the zip from there as both roms include root

Thanks again, I successfully rooted my phone. Before I pick a ROM, though, I read through the forums and noticed in both ROMs that the voicemail icon doesn't work? Is this fixed in more up to date versions for either? I wouldn't want to go without knowing I have some voicemail to check.

Since your rooted download Titanium Backup and backup the apps and data you would like. This includes the Voicemail app if you want the notification. That is built in and sinceits been removed from the roms you won't get the notification unless that app is there. When you choose your rom reinstall TB and restore the Voicemail app and youll be good to go

Agreed, same here til I can find a workaround. I'm actually trying to implement the notification itself directly into the Dialer so it won't have to be a separate app. Problem is the app directly communicates with VM and getting to not break the Dialer is gonna prove a challenge. If all else fails, the app stays. Not a huge deal.
