Root A Newbie's Best Friend: Rooting and Flashing Step by Step Guide

this is my first time trying this and i have no idea where the cwr file is and where to download it i cant find the file??

Look at the top of the forum in the All Things Root Guide under recoveries... Everything you need is in there as the op says.

Have been reading this thread and have a couple of questions regarding rooting my phone, but first a little info on it:
LG Esteem model - ms910 VER. 2.3.4 / ZVB / Gingerbread /H.W. ver 1.0
using WIN XP 32 bit OS

I too am looking for the "CWR -AIO" file and looked under the recovery link but the file located there is named "CWM Root and Recovery" and contains 2 files. I think this is what is also confusing some others here as well. Is this the "CWR" file being referred to? If so which of the files within do I need to use to begin rooting my Esteem? I am also getting an error when trying to install the drivers dl from the link in the sticky (error 1316...a network error occurred when trying to read from the file...."file location on my pc" ). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, after ALOT of reading in the forums I got my Esteem rooted (thanks gbiggie for the reply!). Couldn't get the usb driver provided in these forums to work on my system to save my life, so I went to Metro PCS site and d-loaded the latest one from there (ms910) and it worked fine, if anyone needs it you can P.M. me (if that's o.k. here.) For anyone who is confused (like I was) about the CWR-AIO file used to root your Esteem, it is found (like they said!) under All Things Root, scroll down to "Recoveries" and if you want to root AND install the recovery CWM then pick the top selection Clockwork Recovery and RaidZero Recovery. Unzip this and use the "Root and Recovery" MS-DOS batch file (after you have installed the drivers and properly connected your phone to your computer as per the sticky's instructions). Select the #2 option in the batch file to root and install CWM to your phone. BAM, you're rooted and ready to backup your phone just like I did. Now I gotta figure out what I need to install next, a Rom or a kernel, and which is the right one for my phone so I don't screw up what I just did. Thanks to everyone here for all the info, this site rocks! :smokingsomb:

This method will not work on the Samsung Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959V. It is a different phone and seems not to be able to update to 4.x.x (at least that I can find). Help would be nice.
