A Sprint Hero - Android 2.0 Challenge

Well, I decided to give it a try. I called Sprint a few moments ago. The gentleman I spoke with, Clint, said I was the 2nd person he had spoken to in recent days that wanted to know if the HTC Hero would receive an OS upgrade to 2.0. He tried to find out info, but said he could not and would transfer me to technical. I then spoke to Crystal in tech support. She rather cryptically stated twice, "The Hero is 2.0 capable." Further she said Sprint had nothing in writing at this time indicating what their plans were for OS upgrading of the Hero. I asked her if she was suggesting by her statement which I quoted above that I could obtain the upgrade elsewhere. Her one-word answer, "yes." I am not an Android OS expert. Is what she says true? Could Hero owners, faced with no upgrade from Sprint, get the 2.0 OS upgrade elsewhere--say HTC, for instance?

Well if there is a 2.0 upgrade and Sprint does not release it, I am pretty sure with a rooted phone it would be possible to then install it if you can get your hands on all relevant files needed. Of course most Hero users would not have the tech capability(I am included in this group) to do this safely without possibly bricking their phone. Lucky for me I have a friend who can do this for me as he has done it with his phone and many others.

As far as Sprint not releasing the update I find this highly unlikely. They finally have a phone that stacks up well with its competitors and to have the ability to give their subscribers the latest and greatest and not do so, IMO would be a major business mistake.

Heck, the Devs over on xda-developers are already talking about a v.2.1 dump which is allegedly out in the wild. I'm pretty sure that those who want the latest OS won't be denied regardless of what Sprint decides to do but I personally would prefer to do it without rooting my phone.

The key word in that last sentence is prefer, though. ;)

I completely agree, I would definitely prefer to have Sprint make it official. I am confident they will, but I have been wrong many times before. :o

My friggin head hurts.

Ya know, I've never been one to place factors on my device, for example if this doesn't happen, blah blah blah.

But I have to admit, I bought my phone 30 days ago exactly, and it's in perfect shape. I could take it back, or I could not, hell I could take it back and then buy it again, giving me another 30 days to consider the factors. Sprint is rumored to be releasing 6-8 devices before February, at least 4 are supposed to be android. decisions, decisions, decisions....

I saw a quote from a Sprint VP, responding to a question about the 2.0 update being OTA or if customers would need to hardwire at a local Sprint store. Much of the answer related to a possible need to go to a store due to the size of update, but recognizing this will not make customers happy. Sorry, no link and not in the mood to search.

But the upgrade was part of my decision too and I have seen a lot of updates in reviews and other videos / articles / forums about a Sense UI enhanced version of 2.0.

Sprint has gotten a lot of flak about updates being late or not addressing major issues, a friend of mine who works for Sprint's business division said they would get crucified if HTC created a Sense UI enhanced 2.0 for Euro Hero and it wasn't passed along to Sprint customers.

lmao! wth?
smoke somethin, chill man. It's only a forum and conversation.

yeah the hero is a sweet phone and I like it alot. It's always nice to get upgrades, and I for one am looking forward to a nicer market experience and google navigation. Sprint Nav is not my cup of tea. Guess that's not reason enough to want 2.0 because

have a nice day...

...and if you were to return it to Sprint, what other options do you really have?
you can either...
A) get a different phone, the samsung? pre? eh.. id rather have the Hero anyway... or
B) cancel your contract completely and go to a different provider, do you REALLY want to do this?

@Gizmodo:

I take that tech's "yes" to mean a ROOTED 2.0, not a Sprint safe HTC download.

I would FAR more prefer an official Sprint 2.x update, as I have no desire to root the phone, but if Feb,2010 comes around and there is still no word, then I think at that point it's safe to say things are looking grim, and I will probably root.

Sure I'd like it now... but I can patiently wait a month - which will put it outside of my return time period, but whatever. It's a great phone as is, and I chose it after over a year of watching and waiting. but I think it is VERY safe to say that Sprint WILL NOT leave this phone at 1.5. And the rumors are that they have decided to bypass 1.6 since 2.x is already here. And that makes sense. We just need patience.

New Device Desirable, Old Device Undesirable | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

With the holiday shopping season officially under way, millions of consumers proceeded to their nearest commercial centers this week in hopes of acquiring the latest, and therefore most desirable, personal device.

... ...

"Its higher price indicates to me that it is superior, and that not everyone will be able to afford it, which only makes me want to possess it more," said Tim Sturges, owner of the old device, which he obtained 18 months ago when it was still the new device. "I feel a strong urge to purchase the new device. Owning the new device will please me and improve my daily life."

Heh...

Yeah, I wanted to take my Hero back on day 29 of my new contract and wait to see what new stuff would come down the pipe, but I didn't want to go back to my Touch Pro even more.

So I kept the Hero. :o
